What happened to us? (Ice cream)
I remember as a kid we had some of the best ice cream. Nowdays it’s, well, meh. Even the super fancy stuff like hagen daaz or Ben and Jerry’s… although the fancy stuff is all screwy flavored with chunks of stuff in it, so maybe the ice cream is ok, dunno.

When I was a kid we would make some ice cream on the weekend following Christmas. I found the old family ice cream machine (actually not that old- we brought one as a present for mom a few years ago) but the old tradition hasn’t come back.

Anyhow, we had a bunch of candy canes and I remembered the peppermint candy cane ice cream from one year.

Pretty simple recipe.

6 candy canes broken up in 1 1/2 cups whole milk.
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
2/3 cup sugar
2-3 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 to 1 tsp peppermint extract
1/8 tsp kosher fine salt.

Mix it all together and churn in ice cream maker.

Tastes like I remembered ice cream.

I had thought I just had gotten old and my taste buds had changed. Nope. It’s just they either added a bunch of crap or a bunch of preservatives to making it.

What’s more I’d try getting some milk straight from a cow and try it… live dangerously and all… modern agriculture has some drawbacks it seems.

Y'all don't get Bluebell in the great white north.......best commercial ice cream on the planet!

Your recipe sounds good as well but needs a lot of heavy cream and lots of egg yolks. We make homemade ice cream in the summer mostly with Texas peach chunks.

And I agree, no milk is better than milk straight out of the cow!!!!

I get this crap all the time. Not just so-called premium ice cream either. There is so much carrageenan and gums like locust bean, guar gum etc. in food these days. Sure is tough to find pure food.
As for ice cream. Breyers made the real deal for decades then just quit a year ago.
Now, the only one we can buy is Turkey Hill premium stuff. The vanilla is pure as snow with specs of vanilla. It's better than the old school home made/churned. I always get a brain freeze from that.
Our small batch maker is better and less prone to a brain freeze if you cool your mix first.
But, Turkey Hill Vanilla bean or whatever they call it is tough to beat if you can find it. Haven't tried the other flavors yet. It's made in Lancaster County, PA.

One of the funniest adverts I remember seeing was in Texas in the 80’s

Big billboards by the highway.

HOME MADE HAMBURGERS!
HAND SCOOPED BLUE BELL ICE CREAM!

I wondered if they washed their hands before scooping it! rotflmo

Sorry to differ, but Tillamook beats Blue Bell 24/7/365.
As to home-made, the best I ever had was half a century ago in late summer in Southern Oregon when the Red Haven peaches were ripe and we took turns cranking to make home-made peach ice cream.

Why do people put so much crap in ice cream -- chunks of candy canes, chocolate chips, etc.? Agree with Anne, Bluebell does it best. Vanilla, and seasonally, Peach/Vanilla. (the best)

Once you start making it from scratch you will never go back.

Peach vanilla really sounds good. Will look for it this summer.
