StonecreekReloading 28 ga Remington STS
A friend gave me a quantity of RP 28 ga STS hulls, once fired. Forever, I've only loaded the AA (old style, non HS) in 28ga. From the limited loading data I can find, it appears that the STS can use essentially the same wads and powder charges as the old AA. What is the collective experience of the sage commentators here at AR?

thornellI have all my 28ga. hulls mixed together, and load the STS the same as the AA with no problems.

I assume that is the non-HS AA hulls, right?

CustomstoxStonecreek, you can find a wealth of loads for the STS 28 gauge on the Hodgon web site. I prefer the AA HS but free is a good deal in any situation.

I've looked at the Hodgdon website, but here's my real question: I've loaded about 13 grains of Unique under a WWAA28 wad and 3/4oz of shot for many years in my old-style AA's, and it's a load that has served me well. Will the same load work fine in an STS?

thornellStonecreek, no I load the hs hulls too. I us nothing but dust wads and I have no problems.

Scout Master 54The STS and the old Compression formed AA hulls do use the same wad as both hulls are tapered inside. The newer AAHS hull has greater volume and more like a straight sided hull and needs a wad with a larger base dia. like the new AAHS Wad, Clay Busters HS or Rem PT28.
The STS 28 ga hull is not as good as the AA 28ga HS for reloading life, you will do well to get 6 reloads as the mouth gets very crispy and splis at the crimp folds but for free why not. With the new HS you can easily get +10 reloads or more.
The STS Hull should load fine with the older AA wad, Red Duster, CB clone of the old wad, Down Range Blue or similar. A check of the Alliant site will confirm charge weight. I have long used Hodgdon's Longshot powder for my 28 ga reloads but have recently swithed to Alliant's 20/28 for eveluation.

CustomstoxStonecreek, that load or close to it (13.5 gr with Rem 209 primer and 14 gr with Win 209 Primer) will work just fine with the Rem STS 28 ga hull and is listed in the new Lyman book.
