vapodogI'm not sure what you mean by field loads....Longshot loads some very excellent 12 Ga hunting loads on a par with magnum performance.
Field loads usually are more like a trap load....I'd use a target style powder.....700-X comes to mind...red dot...many others.

Scout Master 54As Vapodog noted what type of field load are you looking for? Hodgdon has a good amount of data on their web site, click over and check it out.

DutchLongshot is very useful for fast, heavy 12 gauge loads, but Hodgdon made a SERIOUS error when introducing the stuff. It should have been named "LOUDshot". JMO, Dutch.

crbutlerDepends on what you are after.
It tends to be either used with heavy charge weights or ultra high velocity loads. I use a lot of it for 1600 fps 1 1/8 oz "pigeon" loads.
Works well in standard velocity 28 ga loads as well.

gnoahhhI use it exclusively for loading 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 oz. duck and goose loads for a vintage L.C.Smith Longrange Waterfowl gun. I'm not going for "magnum" levels of performance out of respect for 86 year old steel, so my loads are on the light side: 28gr. under 1 1/8oz. Nice Shot #2's (AA hull and WAA12 wad, W-209 primer) for 1250 fps. 24 gr. under 1 1/4 oz. Bismuth #2's (AA hull, R-P Power piston wad, BP shot buffer, and W-209 primers) for 1250 fps also.
I was leery at first about the killing power of such light loads but came to find that they kill just fine and are way more pleasant to shoot than "modern" hi vel loads in my other guns. So much so that these loads (and that gun) are all I use anymore. The other guys in the blind using 3" and 3 1/2" autoloaders still don't believe it can be done even though they witness it. Such is the result of advertising by gun and ammo manufacturers, magazine articles and TV shows claiming that waterfowl won't die unless shot with the latest super magnum gun/shell combo!
In a word, Longshot works- and I love it!
