Thanks guys, for aqll the responses. Like I said, I haven't tried cleaning with hot soapy water, just with BP solvent. I have been using Break Free as a rust preventative, but maybe I should go with an oil instead. Thanks again for all the hints.

Remove the grips, then the cylinder and sneak it into the dishwasher with the dishes. I suppose the bottom rack is best though it doesn't seem to matter that much. Take it out while it is still hot and oil it down and put your grips back on.
