CZ 550

Does anyone know if they are even still in business? Every link to their website and the site itself havn't worked in a long time. I was really interested in a zephyr rifle from them. Is there possibly a new webiste now?

Last I heard they were bust. That was a year+ back. They could be ressurected by now, but I've not heard about it.

Andy, What's the idea? There are at least two ways around every mountain, plus at least one more over the top.

If you want big bore rifles like their zephyrs, there is the October Country Rifles or you can make one yourself, etc. If you want underhammers, Forsyth rifling, etc. I bet we can find something that will get you where you want to go.

These are remakes of the old Hopkins and Allen underhammer rifles. They are made by an outfit in Indiana (?) called Deer Creek. I don't think much of Deer Creek but Bruce also sells, perhaps now ONLY sells, a modification of this design that he has made in Nebraska I believe. These, I like a lot - if only because I don't trust Deer Creek (my wife's .50 is a DC and there is this buck that still lives because of it. It is a long, sad story).

Anyway, I have one of Bruce's custom actions. A 4041 Steel action with a screw on barrel (not the quick change setup). Mine is set up with a .45 Badger barrel and a 1x18" twist for shooting paper patched bullets out to 1000 yds (or deer out to about 300).

I like Bruce's action, but it is quite heavy. Also, he has changed his trigger set up since I bought mine and it may be much improved over what I have - which is quite good, but not spectacular.

Guess I was no help at all. Sorry. Are you looking for an underhammer big bore or a big bore (not necessarily an underhammer)?

I have long liked the underhammer design as epitomized by the Hopkins and Allen. Unfortunately, the execution leaves something to be desired. Many if not all H&A barrels are off center by quite a lot at one end or the other and not always at the end where it will cause the fewest problems.

I looked at the Deer Creek rifles on the net, but felt something was lacking. Glad to see I was right. Also, I didn't realize that Bruce's custom actions were so heavy. There doesn't seem to be a need for them to be heavy unless...

Well, let me ask you (if I may), what exactly is wrong with the DC action and what (if anything) can be done to fix it? Why are Bruce's custom actions so heavy?

Hobie, I think you were a lot of help to CZ 550 if he was looking for an underhammer. I'm not really looking for much right now (other than a 16 gauge hammer double of course...) But, I have long thought I could find a use for something like a 69 cal roundball gun. Of any design. I'm not married to any type (other than it has to have a hammer and a wood stock!).

But the .45 paper patch gun is really quite superior to anything I can imagine. It will shoot 550 gr bullets for as far as I care to shoot them.

Bruce's actions are probably just as heavy as any of the H & A actions. If you think about it, it's just a solid chunk of steel that has a slot cut in the bottom for the trigger group, a threaded hole at one end for the barrel plug and tit with a threaded hole for the through bolt on the other end. I hadn't really worked it out before hand and have never handled a real H&A so I didn't think about it being heavy. In comparison to a nice sidelock, you can see there is a lot more metal in this particular flavor of underhammer.

Still, mine balances really well, and with the funky stock I made, it holds great (but boy is that one ugly gun - I need to make pictures to show you just HOW ugly it can be...) Killed a deer this year with it though.

Nearly forgot. The original plan of attack was a large bore underhammer. The reason I was considering the zephyr was the unusual thin and sleek design. If you have any suggestions I'm all ears.
