WyocowboyshooterCleaning a cap & ball revolver
Hey guys,
I acquired a CVA copy of an 1858 Remington New Army .44 this summer. Its a blast to plink around with and it has made me appreciate the older guns. However, keeping it free of rust and corrosion has proven to be a task. Most of my problem lies in the bottoms of the cylinder chambers. I can keep the walls fairly clean, but rust seems to form in the bottom, around the nipples almost overnight. I have been using 30 gr. Pyrodex pellets and CCI caps. I have been using Birchwood Casey cleaner. Would a different solvent help or am I just going to have to do the best I can? I have had the gun in a very humid climate for the past 2 months, but now have it in a much drier climate. Will this help? Any input at all would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Wyo

Paul BraskyI generally use hot, soapy water to clean powder fouling, specifically Pyro P fouling, from my revolvers. However, you then need to thoroughly coat the entire piece with your favorite rust preventative. WD-40, Kroil, or plain ATF/Dexron work very well just as long as you remove it (especially from the nipples) prior to firing. ...Maven
