2 dogs,

The frizzen must have the right carbon content to harden. If the original was case hardened and it has worn through then you could use some type of pack hardening compound such as "Caseinite" or "Quick Hard" these are available from Brownells or possibly your local welding supply. They have instructions for use printed on them. You can try to reharden the original by heating it to a full red color and plunge it in to water. If it hardens, your half way home. Next you should hold it in a vise by the striking face and heat the remainder, from the bend back to the pivot screw hole, up to about 550 degrees to draw that portion back so it is not too hard as it can break. Leave it in the vise until cool, the vise acts as a heat sink to keep from drawing the face of the frizzen. A third option would be to braze or silver solder a thin piece of high carbon steel to the frizzen face. Haven't fixed one in years, but one of the above should work. You might want to find someone in your area that builds muzzle loaders and ask for his help.

Good luck.
