Edmhunter, have you checked out track of the wolf? They have custom traditional guns onhand mostly all the time. Thompson center might not be exactly what you're looking for from a "top maker"

Tennessee Valley and Chandler are some of the best-kit or complete rifles. Many others.

Chandler does magnificent work up to and including museum quality replicas of known arms...

By traditional you mean true to style and configuration of originals or 20th century mass production semi-look-alikes?

The T/C line is about as traditional as the space shuttle.

Contact Cimarron Firearms for one of their Hawken rifles. Back thirty years ago, the owner of the Buckskin Report magazine had a rifle built which would pass at rondyvoo. Uberti builds it and they are a tremendous value in 50 or 54 caliber.
I've had mine since spring of 1981, with zero issues to date; other than the rifling is about worn smooth.

As others have suggested check out the consignment guns at Track of the Wolf to get a sense of prices. I built my own Fusil de Chasse from their parts:

Northstar West has a good reputation:

http://www.northstarwest.com/

This site might give you some ideas. I've seen some guns by Brent Gurtek who is listed there that were handsome in a rustic sort of way.

I've seen a nice iron mounted Lancaster put together Jack Garner who was the original owner of TVM if I'm not mistaken:

http://www.avsia.com/tvm/

I've seen a couple examples of Jackie Brown's work. Like Garner's and Gurtek's his guns are functional working guns more than showpieces:

Danny Caywood makes a very fine fusil. I've seen several:

But, if price is no object then Eric Kettenburg talk to:

Or Brad Emig:

A few years back Bruce McArthur of Flint and Frizzen gunshop, used to be in Clarkston, Mich 8735 Dixie Highway made some of the nicest custom kentucky longrifles I have seen.
He used to have a bit of a website run by his daughter. Bruce is so old school he would pale at the thought of switching on a computer.
try him on (248) 625-3333.

he has a very innovative mind and is one hell of a gunsmith.

A biased opinion here (as it is about my friend) but there are many who share this bias and are happy to promote it because he is among the very best - Steve Zihn in Wyoming. Contact him at szihn@wyoming.com and talk to him if you're interested.

Good hunting!

in the reasonably priced category, TVM is hard to beat. They are just starting on an early Lancaster for me. Best maple they have, 42" swamped "A" profile barrel, either 36 or 40 caliber, fancy three piece patchbox with piercings, a thumb piece with my initials, and a hunter's star on the cheek piece. A slight departure from normal, german silver for all the trim. It was generally reserved for high grade rifles, but I expect it to be used for my lifetime and then passed down. Flinter, of course.
