just do a google search for Hodgdon powders I believe they make 777 or the other BP substitute like pyrodex, they generally have the recipes on the net

VersifierI have seen reenactors loading caplocks and flinters with reduced charges (25-30gr of bp) from paper "cartridges" and ramming home the paper on top of it as a wad to hold the charge in place. I have also pulled balls from my caplocks and touched off the remaining charges to clean them out with no problems. If however, your "breech loading cannons" take actual shotshells, then you need to consult with someone who loads them for older shotguns to get specifics.

45/70 Govt.I own a cannon -- 1" bore, muzzle loader.
Charges for "blanks" are not too critical so long as you don't go crazy. F powder, ff for light loads in smaller cannons.
But what I've found about "blank" shooting is that Pyrodex doesn't work very well. If you can get a huge wad in front of the charge to create back-pressure, Pyrodex will work, most of the time.
But black powder works well. I use toilet tissue for wadding, about 6 squares.
Downside to all this is that toilet tissue will smolder so you want to take care shooting it over dry grass fields. I shoot mine over sandy beaches and water.
