Just found out that Winchester makes '1885 High Walls in .405 Winchester and .38-55, among others. Why did no one tell me about um? Heh. . . . why? Looked at one today, but was chambered for .270 Winchester stupid mag. has anyone had any experience as to whether the new Winchesters are any good? If so, I'll be ordering one in .405 Win.

contract for Winchester. Excellent build quality. I have the Traditional Hunter's in
38-55 and 45-70 and a Trapper in 30-40 Krag.
All are very accurate and beautiful guns.

Those .405s have crescent buttplates that will murder you.

I HAVE THE 405, IT IS A HUNTER MODEL WITH NO SIGHTS AND HAS A RECOIL PAD., IT ALSO HAS GRADE 3 WOOD. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL RIFLE AND IT SHOOTS 1 TO 1 1/4" GROUPS WITHOUT EXTENSIVE LOAD DEVELOPMENT.

I MOUNTED A 1.5 X 6 SWAROVISK (spelling) and will start using it for primitive arms season, it replaces the black powder for whitetail deer season. rifle was invented before 1900 and also the 405 win caliber, it is ok for deer season, primitive arms.

I have an 1885 in 405 with the crescent buttplate. You can order a replacement stock with the recoil pad if that is an issue. Mine has proven to be very accurate with 300 gr. Barnes X as well as 300 gr. Hawks.

I have found the high walls to be extremely accurate as a rule I have owned the brownings in 22 hornet, 6mm rem. 7mag, 30-06. A year ago I purchased the winchester high wall in 270 WSM. It has also proved to be plenty accurate for a hunting rifle. I think if you can pick one up in the mid $900 range you are not getting a steal but you're not being reamed either. As soon as the budget will allow I am also going to be in the market for the high wall in 405. I think that would be a thumper on hogs.
