Gents:
My first rifle my dad gave me as a boy, about 1960, was a Remington rolling block. It was a New York issue with the large hammer and a half cock safety. Three barrel bands with a sling loop on the front band and the other on the trigger guard. Caliber was .50-70 and with a cleaning rod.

Are these still out there? If so I'd like to find one. Average condition is fine as I'm not a collector, but all original and a shiny bore as it will be shot (a lot). Of course, brass, dies, and a shell holder, too, if possible.

What would one expect to pay?

Any historical info would also be appreciated.

Cal, they seem to go from around $600 up to a couple grand for a nice one.
The Swedish rifles are cheaper but I'm not sure if they are really 50/70.
I have one but I haven't shot it and iirc, it was cheap. Something like $350 with dies. The stock does have a crack which I want to fix but the bore is good with quite deep rifling.

Hi Cal.

A great reference for the various .50-70 rifles is the "50-70 Shooter’s Handbook" by Croft Barker. Midway has RCBS .50-70 dies and Starline makes excellent brass. The drawback of the RCBS dies (and apparently also the Lyman) is that they are set up for a .510" to .512" diameter bullet and most original guns used a .515" diameter bullet. I have made a new .514" expander for my RCBS dies from a Grade 8 5/8-18 bolt turned using carbide tooling. I have two .50-70s, a rolling block with a .510 bore and a trapdoor with a .515 bore, so need both size expanders.

The Swedish 12,7x44R cartridge is different enough from the 50-70 so that they are'nt interchangeable.
