Scholfield 1877 Field patent rifle
I just picked up a rifle that is marked as a Scholfield, Field patent 1877. It has a lever on the right side that when pushed forward drops the block and cocks the central exposed hammer. It is barreled for 375 H&H flanged. This is not the original barrel. I have not been able to find any reference on this action. Anyone have any info? I'm at the Tulsa gun show and would like to know about it so I can sell it at a fair market value.

Mike, if you bought it, I would really really love to see pictures of it. I have never heard of a Schofield other than the famous revolver.

The patent date seems at odds with the 375,but perhaps the cartridge is older than I realize.

Pictures would be wonderful.
Thanks,
Brent

Brent,
I did buy it but sold it. It was , I believe, an english action by Scholfield (maker/retailer) built on the Field patent. This was a custon gun barreled recently in 375 H&H flanged on an old action.
It sold yesterday and I had no chance to take photos.

Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I sure wish you had a chance to photo and shoot it, but I understand that things like this happen in the heat of the action that is The Tulsa Gunshow.

The last issue of "Double Gun and Singleshot Journal" has an article by Ross Seyfried that deals in part with the Fields actioned rifles, good read. Evidently there were only 2,500 made by all makers. Most were in black powder and BPE calibers of the day such as 450 BPE and 450 #2 Musket, later some were chambered,or rechambered, in smokeless rounds as the action is reputed to be quite strong. I have one by I. Hollis in 450#2 Musket and really like it, handles and balances nicely and the side lever is easy to use.
Best.
