Ruger #1 7x57

This is one of those rifles you just love to have handy. Yesterday a Coyote was bedded in the field at my farm. 200 yds 140 gr Nosler right through the ear hole. Good way to start the summer.

This is a good shooter a nice " walking " rifle. But what is impressive is the performance of the 7x57 on deer. Really puts the Hammer to em.

You guys are going to shame me into trying that caliber. I have a 7-08 and I think they are almost twins aren't they?

Of course they are.

But you know how it goes...the best caliber/cartridge/rifle in the world is the one you have had great success with.

There is no arguing with a man's success! Go kill a dozen deer or whatever with your 7-08 and it will be the best...for you!

Just use the right bullet, and put it in a good spot. Nothing to it....

Yes? No? Maybe. The 7x57 works with bullets up to 175 gr. which might be a problem due to magazine lenght problems in most, if not all 7-08s.
Of course, not too many people like or even want to use 175gr. bullets in either cartridge so I suppose the point is moot. However, a bullet I really like for the 7x57 is the now long discontinued 170 gr. round nose bullet Sierra used to make. Very accurate in my Winchester M70 Featherweight usually doing .375" cloverleafs when I do my part. They'd take up way too much powder space in the 7-08 as would the Hornady 175 gr. round nose. My 7x57 doesn't much care for 175 gr. spitzers though.

I have a winchester model70 compact in 7mm-08. You can load the 175 grain hornady spire point to work through the magazine. I got about 2475fps using h4350. No loads over the book.

Got my son a Rem. model 7 in 7mm08 when he was 8yrs. old . shot 120gr Rem hollow points in it. Very little recoil , he took about 15 or so deer with it as a kid. He nicknamed it "The Hammer" Its a great caliber

The #1A in 7x57 is a great all around for everything rifle. Mine shoots 140's well and even the round nose Sellier & Bellot 173's shoot great in this rifle. Read an article a while back the praised this caliber in the M70 Featherweight.

The 7mm-08 seems to have a more sharp recoil in my Kimber compared to the 7x57 Ruger. Both calibers are near .308 performance, just different packaging....

A few years back, I had a Ruger M77 in 7x57 which I loaded literally balls to the ball. One day at the range, a guy was trying to sight in his Ruger M77 in 30-06 and was having some difficulty. I'd read where the late Jack O'Connor had said the the difference in recoil between the 7x57 and 30-06 when chambered in the same make rifles was very noticable. Guess old Jack was right. Even though my loads were on the hot side, the recoil from the 7x57 was definitely less.

You are correct. The big advantage of the 7x57 compared to the 7mm-08 is with heavier bullets than 140 grains.
