Are all #1 actions the same size?

I picked up a #1 action off from a .458 Tropical to build a smokeless muzzleloader on. It is starting to look like I'm going another route with the MLer. So.... what to do with the action?

I was thinking maybe having it barreled with a .257 Weatherby bbl. Would the action from a .458 accept a .257 bbl? Are all the threads the same size?

If not the .257, any other darling rounds out there that suite the #1 well? I really don't "need" another rifle, but I can't just let this action sit in the safe now can I???

All # 1 actions are the same size from 22 Hornet to 458. You should not have a problem selling the action if you don't want to re-barrel it.

Time to start watching for a deal on a barrel...

All No. 1 actions are the same size. However, often putting a barrel off of one on another is not just a simple "unscrew & screw on" job because the threads are not necessarily cut the same on each one. So the barrel may have to have a thread cut off, the shoulder moved forward, the barrel fitted to the other action, and then rechambered with a new extractor cut made in order to have the sight rib screws & holes on top!

It is probably easier to fit a brand new barrel on a No. 1 than to use a No. 1 "takeoff" barrel....

Sorry, I didn't think he was talking about using a Ruger take off barrel.

At any rate I don't know where you got your Info but all Ruger # 1's have the same barrel thread, it's 1 X 16 V Threads per inch. Screwing on a take off barrel is not a thread problem, it's a head space problem.

The factory Ruger No. 1 barrel has an unthreaded portion for a 1/4" or so at the breech - the threads don't come all the way back like on most actions. I don't have an action without a barrel so I'm not certain if the action is threaded completely or not. The M77 barrel shanks are almost identical except for the unthreaded portion. Looks like you could turn the unthreaded portion off a No. 1 barrel and screw it right in a M77. Of course the chamber would need to be lenghthen. For what its worth the M70 Win. uses the same threads on thier barrels but the breech is different of course.

A local gunsmith removed the cylindrical part of a 243 #1 barrel I sold him, and installed it on a M77 without needing any chamber work. Case head to barrel shoulder dimension was the same.

M70 push feed matches M77, barrels will interchange, and sometimes headspace correctly.
