EDELWEISSIn search of smiths and sources
I just picked up a No1 Cheap! I couldnt resist it for the price. Its a 45-70 that the previous owner put a oil finish on the wood. Its been years since I sold my last No1, so Im kinda out of the loop. I dont have any sources for after market items. Who makes stocks and other gizmos for No1's
Im considering rechambering it to 45-120 or possibly 450 Nitro; but I dont have any ideas on a good gunsmith.
Any suggestions
First... fire some 500g jacketed bullets with something like 53g of IMR3031 (1800fps) and if you don't mind the recoil in that 7 lb. rifle then go for bigger.
If it's an older #1 then it will have an adjustable trigger that's hard to beat. If not then the Moyers and Kepplinger triggers are nice upgrades. Brownell's and Midway carry both of them. I believe Boyd's makes a laminated stock for the #1 and check Treebone Carving for fancy custom stocks. If you do replace the stock maybe I can help you defer the cost of the new one. I would like to put a #1 stock on an old Ruger #3 I have.
For gunsmiths, "Google" Ruger #1 and you should find a number of them. Congratulations on your "new" rifle. I'm sure you're going to enjoy it.

EDELWEISSThanks Jon, I havent decided on anything yet. My frist No1 was a 458 that I just had to have, once I saw that gapping hole in the barrel. I made the mistake of trying to muscle the recoil insted of rolling with it. The ignorance of my youth was compounded when I sold it at a give away price.
Now older(much) and somewhat wiser(?), I have dreams(fantacies) of Africa. Whan I started looking around, I had a 375H&H in mind. Truthfully I trade this one for a used 375H&H if I could. Until my funds recover Im toying with lots of ideas for this one.
Theres something about those 3 inch cartridges that's just calling me. All of the 450 Nitro is cool; but for practicallity I was thinking 45-120 would work for me. Rechambering seems cheaper than a new barrel and I still keep the big hole in the barrel.

Salvage33Boyds makes a WALNUT stock for the Ruger #1. Semi-inletted, which means that you will need to spend some time with a rasp, dremel tool, and sandpaper to make it fit perfectly. Item # for it is 300-307, price in their newest catalog is $99.99. They also sell claro walnut blanks and will turn one for you to fit the #1.
Boyds phone number is 605-996-5011. Website is
www.boydsgunstocks.com Be advised that their site is way slow, seems to run on an in house server, and not all items are shown on the website.
I have used them, and they are very responsive to inquiries, their phone sales staff are helpful, polite, friendly, and professional. I have absolutely no negatives to say about them or their products.
