Michael RobinsonI just pulled out my copy of Kirton's book, and your rifle is specifically mentioned.
It appears to be 100% original.
Congrats again!

Steve BertramThis rifle was re-barreled by Gibbs after 1925 and is not Metford rifled. The fore end has wood inlaid to fill in from a larger diameter barrel that was previously on the rifle, my guess is that it started out life as a .461 Gibbs.

Michael RobinsonInteresting. Kirton does list it as a .303.
He also lists my rifle but with a lot of question marks!

Steve BertramPlenty of questions on the Gibbs rifles. It is a shame the books were lost. Sporters in original configuration are very rare, most having suffered the indignity of conversion to American varmint rifles or other poorly thought out modifications.
I have put a few back to the correct configuration and have another on the bench now, just slightly earlier than the above rifle, it had been turned into a varminter and had a G&H style stock on it when I acquired it, now re-barreled with a new Krieger tube to .303 British and just waiting for me to regulate the sights and stock it.

Peter ConnanBeautiful H&H.
Is that slider forward oft he safety lever a takedown latch?
01 November 2024, 10:08
H&H_MadIt's actually a sliding catch that locks the safety on should you wish to do that.

Steve BertramLovely rifle, I saw the add in OZ after you purchased it. Good grab, that is a nice little rifle. Small action? I bet it is.
