Rechambering a .458
So I have an old red-pad No. 1 in .458 that I would love to rechamber. Don't want a Lott. Already did one in .450 NE. Anything else fun and exotic out there that cleans up the belt of the .458? I know some of the BP cartridges would work, but the twist rate is really too fast.

How about 450 No.2?

Hollis, I am leaning strongly in that direction. I have always admired the round. The only issue I can think of is whether the sight rib screw hole comes too close to the chamber.

If it's an old one with the 130 prefix on the serial number it is probably OK. I have one that Hamilton Bowen rebored and chambered in .500 Nitro for me about 25 years ago. He told me then that the early 130 prefix serial numbered guns had plenty of wall thickness.

Hollis, it is a 131 prefix, so I dunno ...

450 Rigby? However, I don't consider anything much over a 458win/450 Niro as being fun!

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Matt: agree the fun factor is missing on the bigger stuff. I like the old chamberings, though.

Bill, maybe you could look at the 450 Alaskan. 348 Win necked up to accept the .458 bullet. I think if the case is long enough to utilize the original throat of the 458 Win Mag the 348 Win case would clean out the 458 Win Mag belt an also give you a rimmed cartridge with plenty of power. Of course a very good recoil pad would need to be installed like it should have been done with the original chambering!
