Thoughts on 50 Cal. #1
Thinking of a possible re-barrel job on one of the No.1 rifles I own. Starting with the .500 S&W up to maybe the 50/90 Sharps. Any thoughts or ideas on a project like this. Must be the long Ohio winters. The .500 S&W could be fun and reloading wouldn't be awfully expensive. Also who can do this sort of work on Ruger No. 1's.

I have a No.1 in 50-110 and it is a hoot although quite a bit longer than the 500S&W.
What is the No.1 chambered in which you are thinking of rebarreling?
Perhaps a rebore and rechamber would be a possibility and the standard length barrel may work out well for such a cartridge. Would be nice to do on a 45/70 No.1.

There is a 50/140 Ruger No 1 for sale on Gunbroker right now.

500 S&W sounds super cool! A friend of mine has a custom #1 chambered in 500 Linebaugh Maximum. It is very similar to the 500 S&W. H&R makes their Handy Rifle in 500 S&W. It only costs $350.

Just buy a Winchester 1885 in .50-90. They made a couple hundred of them and they sell for about $1100 to $1200

I have an older #1 originally chambered in 458Win which I believe has a slightly heavier barrel contour than current production 458s. I considered having it rebored to 500NE but instead rechambered to Lott. At any rate, reboring a 458 with ejector & safety button modifications is probably the easiest and cheapest way to a 50 cal. I also added weight to the butt and a Decelerator pad, recoil isn't that bad.

Hamilton Bowen used to convert 458 #1's to 500 Nitro with a rebore. I think he specified that the customer check the depth of the quarter rib screws before sending him the rifle, as some were drilled to deep to allow a rebore. You could give him a call or e-mail and ask. He is a super nice guy. He no longer works on #1's. He also used to make #1's in 577 2.75" Nitro! He would not do the longer versions, as he thinks they are just a little much for the #1.

Fla, that is one gorgeous stock you have on that No. 1. Did you do the work? Wow. Just wow.

Kidd, you could also just go with that hoary old American classic, the .50-70 government and run smokeless in it when you don't to enjoy the boom and snort of black.

That is a good looking stock.
I like the Alex Henry style grip. Very nice touch!

you would be ahead of the game to find someone who has rebarreld number ones and has the sight/ scope mounting issue figured out. the smith 500 would be neat as would any of the old winchester cartrigdges, the nitro cartridges or the 50 alaskan.

Bill & Huvius, no I didn't do stock myself, it is fiddleback maple. Forend is round with ebony tip. Quarter rib is custom too. Thanks.
