Ruger #1 stock needed.

I scored a steal on a #1 in 7mm mag. Unfortunatly after the deal was done (4 years after) I discovered the stock is cracked. Now the guy that traded it to me is my Dr. and a good buddy and he offered to take it back but it was aquired with the intention of making a classic stalking rifle out of it. Rebarrel to 9.3x74R unless you guys can talk me into somethign even cooler.

However I can not find a replacement stock?

You may want something of more quality than factory replacement, but Ruger will restock the rifle for you. Can't order separately for they are fitted by them but just a suggestion. It requires you sending them the firearm. I have seen some very nice wood from Ruger on the No. 1's.

I am one of those guys that nice wood don't do a thing for I intend to hunt this gun and hunt it hard.

I just need a servicable stock and I am good to go. Plus i hate giving anything to the factory monkeys,

Then have it repaired by a good `smith with colored epoxy. It will surprise you how well it blends in and works.

I thought about thet. The problem is that someone already repaired it badly. That coupled with I want to chamber it in 9.3x74R has me not wanting to trust a repaired stock.

There are often serviceable stocks on Gunbroker. I havel also seen a lot of barrels there, and bought a couple. Let me say, though, that I have never found a used barrel that came close to registering. However, the contour is right and the rib fits, so it could save a lot of expense.

If you are serious about just wanting a serviceable hunting stock, you might consider a Bell and Carlson. They make a really tough stock for the Number 1 that works well. It is slightly heavier than the wood one, which might not be bad in a 9.3x74. The wood stocks simply will not interchange in my experience. I have recently restocked three, and am starting on another, and none of the stocks could be moved without some amount of work. (I tried just to see). These were heavy caliber rifles, which I liked to bed at the front for good bearing. My thought was to use one which needed refininshing as a "mule" to avoid having to reblue the others. I quickly found I couldn't do this. Surprisingly, I have had good luck installing number ! wood on Number 3's over the years, but swapping between number 1's is tough. Since you will likely have to work on the stock anyway, I would have the original repaired, or go glass. I can't imagine that a stock is cracked to the point of ruin, but wasn't noticeable when the trade was made. Some good epoxy and metal rod work will solve a lot of problems. You just have to perform surgery till you get to where you need to make the repair.

I have several new takeoff stocks, but need to keep them. I have found I always do better, if I decide to sell a custom rifle, by replacing the original stock and selling the custom stock separately. They always sell quickly on eBay.

I don't believe Ruger sells barreled actions any more, so there are generally quite a few Ruger stocks around, if you decide to go that way.

The craxk and repair is quite noticible. I didn't see it because I didn't look for it as the trade was with a godo buddy. He didn't see it because when he got it in a trade it was from anothe rfriend of ours and it was simply part of a larger deal and it spent several years in his safe unused.

I am goin got rebarrel it so I am GTG on the action and the rib. The B&C is an idea I had not thought of. Now I am wondering if that sexxxxxyyyy dark green with black spiderwebbign might not look pretty cool.

Thanks for the idea. Now if you just had a takeoff 9.3x74R barel you wanted to trade.

Just look at Adam Freemans website Luxus Walnut.
Some real nice wood. He might make a deal with you on some plain wood if he has any.

I love wood. I even appreciate some of teh gorgeous wood I see on rifles some of it is truly amazing. However fancy figure and swirl dosen't make it shoot any straighter LOL and on my wood stocked rifles I prefer plain jane wood so that:

1. When I ding it up I don't feel so bad about it.

and

2. I cna spend all the money saved on either optics or taxidermy.

I will check out luxus shortly.
