cewe25-20 Single shot
Hi,
I just bought a nice lo-wall Win 25-20 SS and now is time for load development etc. What bullets/loads can be used? I tried posting this on the Smallbore forum without any response

MtnGunThe first thing to do is find cases for it. The .25-20SS and the .25-20WCF are NOT the same thing.

ceweCases and reloading dies are on the way thanks to a friend on AR. He´ll also be supplying me with reloading data etc.
I´m just curious about what kind of loads people are using, type of bullet etc.
And velocities!

MtnGunI have used two bullets mainly, with the .25-20SS. Lyman 25720, and Lyman 257420. IMR 4227 is a great powder. Powder charges vary, and I wont give one for several reasons. Does your Low Wall have a bushed firing pin? The Kelver Schuetzen books are going to be a must read for you. They have some good information on the .25-20SS.
Enjoy your neat rifle!

MtnGunAnother load that has worked well for me, is the 257420 bullet and Unique powder. I would vary the charge from 4.5 to 5grs of powder, depending on the rifle.

ceweMtnGun:
I´m guessing that you´re shooting cast bullets from a Lyman mold?
Looks like I have a lot of learning to do...I´ve never used cast bullets! Sounds like fun though. I use Vihtavuori powders so I´ll have to check the burning rate on IMR.
4.5-5grains...looks like I´ll save money compared to loading the .416Rigby!

MtnGunYes, cast bullets out of a Lyman mould. If it were me, I would not shoot jacketed bullets out of an original Low wall barrel.

ceweMtnGun: Thanks for the advice. I guess I should start looking for some cast bullets or buy a mould. What is the diameter of the bullet you use?

BrentI use a couple of bullets from NEI moulds. One is 65 gr the other 79 gr. Neither with gas checks.
Velocities in the 1400 fps using Swiss 3fg and a little bit slower using 1.5 fg as I recall.

MtnGuncewe, I have had best luck with .259" bullets. Either sized to .259" or you might get lucky and have them drop from the mould at that diameter. Brent's black powder loads also sound interesting. You may want to give them a try as well.
