De Haas Books - Single Shot Design (triggers)
Hello Folks

Does anyone have the Frank De Haas book “Single Shot Actions – Their Design and Constructionâ€. This seems to be a rare one, I have most of his other books but this one is rarely available and very expensive on the ABE books list.

Anyhow, I would love to know what he says in respect to trigger and sear design. If someone has this book and can help it would be great to hear from them.

If folk can suggest other references I would also be grateful, the systems I’m especially interested in are the German FB type where the sear lies vertically behind the hammer, pivoted right at the top or up to half the depth of the receiver from the top e.g. Haenel type.

Cheers - Foster

I haven't seen that one available either. You might try writing his son Mark, who still sells many of the books in the series. The last time I ordered from him, the address was:

Mark de Hass
20049 West State Highway Z
Ridgeway, MO 64481 USA

He usually has an ad in the Single Shot Exchange, and if you have copy of SSE (I do not) you can probably get his phone number there as well.

Some versions of the Farrow rifles use a trigger as you describe. Several single shot gunsmiths post regularly over at the forums of the ASSRA. You might try posting questions in the Gunsmithing forum here as well.

I've wondered if such sears could wear prematurely, since the hammer rolls on the sear patch as the hammer rises. The flat spring Winchesters had a clever way of relieving main spring tension until the hammer was nearly up (described in de Haas's big book), but the coil spring jobs would not have this and seem to give no special trouble.

What are they going for these days?

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.
