rons1885
I've been thinking about getting an 1885 hi-wall in 45-70. I've looked at a Browning (non-BPCR), the Winchester and the Ubereti. Of the three I like the Ubereti the best. The barrel weight seems better since it is not tapered and it's heavier. The machining also seems to be as good or better. They make a model called the special sporting with a 32 inch barrel, checkered pistol grip and foreend as well as Creedmore sights. Has anyone owned one of these? What are your thoughts? I plan on using it for plinking rather that BPCR competition so I'll be burning smokeless powder in it. Anyone know what kind of pressures this gun can handle with reloads?

JPH45I cannot speak to the Uberti, but I did have a 45-70 in the Browning 1885 (manf'g circa 1987-88)It shot great. The rifle will handle Ruger #1 level loads with ease, but it must be remembered that the Ruger had a longer throat than the Gov't ball chamber the Browning is made with. A throating reamer and a little care will resolve that. I imagine the Uberti is a strong rifle, but I wouldn't push it any harder than Marlin level loads.

BrentI can't help with the Uberti either. Had one of their pistols and was not impressed, the 85, I've never seen.
Have you considered the best of all of them?

meteI use a 1885 Browning in 45-70. Barrel is cut to 22" for better handling and weight for hunting. Gloss on stock and metal have been removed .A very strong action ,very well made .Easy to get 1" groups with any factory loads. No need to look any further !
