Price on Ruger #1
A gun dealer has a Ruger#1 in .243 on consignment. They are asking $499.00. A in-law told me that since it has a red recoil pad it was made before 1978. Don't know what it means. Is this a good price? I have a #1 in 30-06 and love it and though this might be a nice complement.

That's not too bad a price. I'd offer $350 and work up. If they turn you down, say you'll splt the difference at $375. It works for me, more often than not.

I bought a Ruger No. 1S this month, .45-70, used but in outstanding condition with a perfect bore with no copper streaking, having fired only lead alloy bullets, for $450.

Let me tell you something. Listen to the voice of experience. Having bought, sold, and traded guns for almost 40 years, I can assure you that when you find the gun you want, the one you REALLY want, the one you have dreamed about, the one you have read about, the one you have thought about day in and day out for months, just BUY the damn gun, you will be much happier (and don't EVER trade it in for something else, PLEASE DON"T). Forget the consequences, just buy it. You can nickle and dime and agonize till hell freezes over, but the right gun, the one you REALLY want, the one you that has consumed your waking hours for weeks, or months, comes around very seldom. When you find it, BUY it, and don't look back and don't quibble about a few dollars one way or another.

To hell with your wife; BUY the dang gun. (I'd rather sleep with some of my guns than my wife - is that pathetic or what?) To heck when the gun was made, to heck with what recoil pad it has, to heck with those minor details, if it is the gun that you want, BUY IT.

k5,
I've got a No.1 S made in the mid 80's with a red recoil pad. I've also got a No.1 RSI made in the late '90's that has a black one. I'm not really sure when the changeover took place, but it must have been sometime after '86.
