Converting a single shot rifle

swageallConverting a single shot rifle
Anyone here have any recomendations on converting newer single shot rifles to shoot the 50-110 cartridge?? What make and model do you prefer, and what are the pros and cons you know of when attempting this conversion.
Thanks

I think your best bet is a Ruger #1. Sohuld not be much od a problem to convert a 45-70.

BrentPiece of cake in general, though most would do a .50-90 using a fastish twist and heavier bullet. These are relatively common in the bpcr world, and no big deal.
Can be easily done on almost any decent singleshot action such as a Winnie, Sharps, Ballard, Remington or Swede roller (with a tweek to the top of the block), Rem Hepburns, etc etc.
If you would be interested in a Swede action - I have one to get rid of. It is already configured for .50-90.

Thanks for the tips,
I have a Ruger #1 in 7mm mag, Will do some more checking around to see if it is feasible to use this action, if not maybe start looking for another ruger #1 in 45-70. I will be using copper jacketed bullets, .510" in diameter around 450 to 550 grains in a 32" to 34" barrel with a 1 in 24 twist or maybe a 1 in 28. Haven't fully finished working out the barrel specs.

Brentswageall,
If you are going to use copper bullets then I suppose you will be using smokeless powder in steroidal loads.
If that is indeed the case, the rollers might not be a good choice. Stick with the Ruger. From everything posted here, the recoil in that particular action will be severe in the extreme however.

swageallBrent;
You are right on about the smokeless powder loads, but only in light to moderate amounts. The barrel I am thinking about will have a muzzel brake to give some extra relief from recoil. Strickly a bench gun for testing different ogive's and weight's while working up loads with .510 bullets. I can live with some extra noise, but don't like shoulder breakers.

Woodrow SSwageall,
May as well go all of the way and chamber for the 50-140. I seen one at a cowboy action shoot and did it ring the long range buffalo. It was built on a ruger #1 with a 30" octagon barrel and a really nice piece of wood the guy had drying in his shop for 20 years, just waiting for the right project gun. Its one hell of a cartridge.

I believe SSK Industries converts a lot of Ruger No. 1's to big-bore rounds....
I believe that when converting No. 1's to larger cartridges, about all that has to be done to the action is to install a new extractor/ejector cut for the size of the new case......

Paul HThe only additional step I'm aware on the #1 when using large dia rounds is recessing the safety to clear the rim. Not sure if the 50-110 etc is in this catagory or not, I'm pretty sure the 500 NE requies it.

Idaho Sharpshootermy gunsmith built one for me last summer on a Uberti HiWall replica...originally a 45-70, but any caliber will do. A buddy is building his Uberti from a 30-40 Krag I sold him. He was dying after shooting mine. The 50-110 is a piece of cake, brass is available from Starline, and CH4D has the dies in stock. Mine has a 35" 1 3/8" octagon Badger barrel. With a case full of black and a 650gr bullet it shoots under 3" at 200yds for 5-shots.

PS: I do have a #2 (#3 action with adult-sized wood and octagon bbl) in 45-120. Hammer time!

swageallThanks to everyone for the tips and ideas,
I have contacted Wayne York from oregunsmithing and he is building me a 32" contoured barrel with a one in 28 twist and installing a muzzel brake of his own design to fit my Ruger #1. The 50-110 cartridge shooting a 500 to 550 grain copper jacketed bullet with smokeless powder will be the load I will try first. Lots of good ideas and recomendations, again Thanks.
