Browning 1885 .45-70
Bought a Browning 1885 in .45-70 yesterday from Cabelas in Post Falls. Found it on GunsInternational. What a beauty, gorgeous wood. Already have hand loads ready. Should be here by Wednesday. I'll post pictures once it arrives.

Anyone else shooting an 1885 in .45-70? If si, I'd like to hear about your experience. Thanks

Michael

Good move Michael !
For deer a premium 300 gr is all you need .Barnes or Swift A-frame will do a fine job on even the biggest deer. There are factory loads too if you don't hsndload.
Mine is accurate ,effective . Shots here are normally within 100 yds so a 1x4 scope is fine.
For woods hunting I cut barrel to 22" no loss of velocity for that cartridge but handier and lighter. The large flat receiver begs for a bit of engraving , eagle and bison on mine !
Enjoy ! dancing

I own three High Walls, .30-30, .38-55 and my beloved .45-70. Shot´s very well with 300grs Hornady HP bullets...

I had one for a while and it shot really really well. I don't recall what I swapped it for but I have wondered why I let it get away.

I had one for a year or two, not a thing wrong with it, good rifles. I still prefer the Sharps '74 so the Browning went down the road for what I don't recall. However, I would love to have a low wall in 32-20 or a high wall in 38-55. Truly classic rifles and undoubtedly stronger than the Sharps.

Yes, the .38-55 is one of the classic US target rounds. I will not miss it. Here´s a picture...

I had one for a couple of years that I used to get started in black powder cartridge rifle shooting with. I mounted a Soule-type tang sight on and shot black powder loads. I used a 500-grain bullet cast 20:1 lead to tin from Lyman mold 458125, sized to .458, and lubricated with SPG lube. I used a .030 card wad over 67 grains of Goex 2F in Remington cases with WLR primers. It would shoot well under 24-inch groups at 800 yards. I never tried it with modern ammo.

I have two 1885s... one in 45-70 and one in 375HH. The 45-70 is the single most accurate rifle I own. 405gr Remington soft points in front of H335. It's a "one ragged hole" gun at 100yds.

And the H335 makes for a pretty cool fireball out of the muzzle too!
