T/C vs. NEF
I'm thinking about getting my first single shot rifle, and have two questions.

1) What are the advantages/disadvantages of the T/C vs. the NEF?

2) How accurate are single shot rifles?
I'm hoping for 2-300 yard accuracy with a 7 MM Mag-300WM range caliber for pronghorn/mule deer in WY.

Thx!

For starters the H&R Handi's are not suitable for Magnums. Don't know about the T/C.

If you want to shoot a magnum single shot get a Ruger #1.

The H&R in .280 would fit the bill nicely for your hunts. Mine shoots better than I can and does it economically. I have 1 TC, 2 Ruger #1s, and 4 NEF/H&Rs and can honestly say that the H&Rs are as accurate as you'd ever need for big game hunting.

Thanks for the info. Generally, which is more accurate, the T/C or NEF? What kind of groups do they get at 100 yards, for example?

Thx,

I looked it up and the T/Cs do come in Magnums, but the NEFs don't. I'd have to go with a .30-06 if I went NEF, or a 280 as "The Slug" suggested. With T/C, something like 7MM.

NEF .280s are one of the most accurate they offer, mine is extremely accurate. The 26" barrel will crowd 7mag performance. This was shot at 100yds last weekend with a start load in my .280 Improved Ultra.

I have no experience with NEF rifles but have extensive experience with T/C Encore and Contender rifles and handguns.

Encores will handle magnum chambering; Contenders will not.

As far as accuracy is concerned, I would call it excellent in both types. My 30/06 barrel will do about 0.6 MOA off the bench with Barnes solids and about 1 MOA with Barnes Triple Shocks. My 7mm Rem. Mag. will do about 1 MOA, etc. These are all with factory barrels and handloads. I pretty much expect all my Encore and Contender rifle barrels to do no worse, for calibers .308 and under, than 1 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards.

I am not a fan of belted cases in tip up actions. Rimmed being the first case of choice with rimless coming in second. That belt is a real PITA when loading with cold fingers hanging up on the extractor or going over the extractor groove while closing the action. As far as T/C vs. NEF, I'm in the T/C camp because the versatility, quality and style makes it worth the extra price to me. Either can shoot nearly as well as a bolt gun with some tweaking and tuning.

T/C Encore in 300H&H for nostalgia and performance, 7STW for performance. There are over 100 chamberings IIRC for the Encore, up thru 458 Lott.
