Heads Up on Ruger #1 Safety Button
There is hope for all of us having brass hang up on that button.
I'm going to get 2 of them!

Let us know how they work out. It still looks like the "button" is too high and too far forward to allow the brass to exit without hitting it. I am a bit skeptical as there are loads of objects on the market that do not meet expectations.

Yes it does look high.. But I can file it down if all else fails! At least it looks better than the stock stopper! If it works better GREAT!

Mike:

While I have not used the safety button shown, I do know the man behind it and have no doubt that it will do all that they say it will.

I am sure you will be pleased.

Best to all,

It looks like a nicer one than the one I'm working on. You know the rifle too Glenn! Wink I'm sure that this will make a nice addition to your craftmanship.

All you have to do is grind the hump off, contour it a bit and checker it..I do that to all my old Rugers and all the single shots..Takes about an hour but you have to have a checkering file.

It will be flush like a shotgun, but the checkering gives your thumb a good bits and you never miss putting it off an on even under the worst of stress.

The problem isn't the hump on the ones I have owned it is the front 'tang' in front of the hump that is too long. You can remove the safety and cut this front tang back but you have to be careful as the slot it moves in will be uncovered if you cut too far. If necessary you could also lower the 'hump' while you have it out. The classiest is to recess the safety but that requires a mill.

For fun I just took 20 once fired brass and ejected them from my .375 H&H. All 20 hit the "front tang" and stopped right there. Not a big deal I suppose. It's sort of antithetical to have a single shot rifle and then worry about the speed of the follow up shot.

I learned to tilt my rifle about 30 degrees to the right as I open the lever. When the empty case is ejected the force of gravity makes it miss the safety. With this technique the safety is pretty much a non-problem.
I mentioned this in the gunsmithing forum and a guy turned his nose up at it. I said it works easier than you think and it costs $0.00 to try it.

SR47559 It is no doubt that will will work and cost will be zero, but the flaw still remains and what has been done is just a 'work around' and I prefer to correct the fault. Just my perspective of course.

Looking at this photo, it looks like the safety would actually sort of deflect the case up and out of the rifle(provide you adjust the ejector properly).

Check out the February edition of Guns & Ammo. Craig Boddington wrote about this saftey on page 17. He said it worked really well!

Check the pic at the link up top. That's Craig Boddington and Doug Turnbull in the pic.

The rifle has many faults that people work around. Tilting the rifle is no big deal compared to some of the others.
There is some compromise in every mechanical design. For the the #1 is most offensive because they put the safety on the tang.
The tang is where a tang sight is supposed to be mounted.

I ordered one and put it on today. Took me about 30 minutes and I'm no great whiz with tools. It works as advertised on my rifle. It also looks good.

Nice idea and good introductory price. The late model tang safties from Ruger catch brass,
especially RIMMED brass. You can bob them off with a dremel tool cheaply on the leading edge.
OR you can get this new item. Either way,
Ruger #1's need to be fixed. The tilting manuever touted by some is like "close" only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades. This
step in reloading takes the gun off your shoulder and precludes rapid reloading. Something you need to practice for DG shooting
whether its Cape Buffalo or Feral Hogs.
I carry 2 spare rounds in a wrist bandolier and
reload without taking the gun off the shoulder.
I want the brass to clear the gun and leave me an open chamber for the next round. Works great with a 405 Win and a 450/400 NE 3in.

Good Shooting

Tetonka,
Why buy a single shot at all of rate of fire is a big deal. Most of these rifles are never hunted with. Look at all the used rifles out there. They just set in the safe.
I find that the tilting process works if I need it. It is rare that anyone would really need it since they rarely try to shoot a #1 rapidly.
A lot of this safety talk is crybaby nit picking.

Again I ask why whine about it? It is a single shot. Buy a repeater if you think you will need rapid fire.

I put mine on. Its works great and I got a second one for my .303.

I was out at Trop's in Elizabethtown PA on Tuesday to do some gun trading. Dave Dunn is the new owner, and has strong interests in anything gun-related. He will have Craig Boddington and Doug Turnbull at his booth at the Harrisburg show next week...I believe they're there on the 9th. I'm sure they'll have some of the new Ruger #1 safeties there to sell....maybe even a few of my former rifles.

I think that's the classiest solution of all I've heard so far.

I have checkering files but had never even thought of using them for that. Guess I'll need to fish out my rack of No. 1's and get busy.

Thanks, Ray. tu2

The good people of Trop's gun shop in PA just turned me onto these, and insist they solve the problem.

Am I the only person that actually likes the fact that the safety catches the brass? I thought it was designed to do this in the first place? It sure beats bending down and picking it off the ground.

If I needed a quick follow up shot I just did the 30degree tilt that SR4759 mentioned.

Like SR4759 said, it you want to shoot fast, get a repeater.
s to the comment that most #1's are safe queens, that may not be quite correct. Speaking o nly for myself, I hunt with my Rurer #1 rifles and the safety thing has never been problem. The 30 degrfee tilt works, plain and simple so I see no need to alter the safty on my rifles.
On another note, I I were to replaced all the safties on my Ruger #1's, I'd almost have to put a mortgage on the house. I collect the damned things. coffee
