Remington Rolling Blocks
I was talking to a friend of mine long distance
today and he recently picked up a Remington rolling block single shot rifle. The owner who
sold it to him says its a .30-40 Krag caliber,
I have never heard of this combination and asked
him if he was sure of the caliber, he said the
barrel was marked .30 and nothing else, and the
gun is still in original condition. Hopefully I
will be able to check this gun out in a couple of
weeks, but I have never heard of any other calibers except 7x57, .43s etc. Is there a collectors guide on rolling blocks? Im sure some
of you guys on the forum have experience with these guns and have some imput. Thanks

If I remember correctly the rolling block was made in 4 different size actions plus one for handguns. Therefore the list of cartridges used was a long one. AS the 30-40 ( 30 Gov't) was our military round it was available in many different rifles.

Actually it's quite possible that it is a 30-40, but I would have the chamber cast to make sure before I shot it. The Rolling block was made in sizes 1 thru 4, 1 being the largest (there was also a 1 1/2). I have a 1 in 50-70, and a 4 in 22 RF. They're kind of cool old rifles, and yes they were available in a multitude of calibers. - Dan

According to James Grant in Single Shot Rifles,
the .30 Govt.(30-40 Krag)was chambered in the No.5 rifles.The no.5 was also offered in 30-30,7MM Mauser,.303 British,32-40 HP,.32 Win. Spl.
and 38-55 HP.

Hey my Remington Rolling Block is chambered in 219 Donaldson Wasp and I guarantee it is not a factory chambering, but any action that has been around that long could be chambered (rechambered) in most any caliber.
Apparently the Remington shop would also turn out some fairly custom guns on the smokeless RB action.
