Best fitting pre-fit recoil pad for a Ruger #1
What have you all found to be the best fitting pre-fit recoil pad? I
need to replace the recoil pad on a Ruger No. 1-H in .405 Winchester,
and I want to get something that fits well without having to fill screw
holes and drill new ones and without having to do too much sanding.

Thanks,

Jesse

I have found that many of the prefits don't fit as advertised. This may be because the gunmakers will occasionally change stock dimensions. I have better luck, if I remove the old pad & take it to a well-stocked dealer. I then simply match them up by placing new & old back to back. If you are careful not to damage packaging & put everything back where you found it, no one seems to mind.

I have used this method on both synthetic & wood stocks. Sometimes, it may be necessary to enlarge the screw holes lengthwise on the new pad. This will give you a bit of up & down adjustment when fitting the pad.

Good luck & good shooting.

I put a Limbsaver on my No. 1 Lott and had to fill and redrill. The pad itself is a bit proud, but tolerable. Good pad, though.

IMO there is no such thing as a pre fit, its an oxymoran...All pads need to be fitted and sanded to the wood, in other words the stock needs to be refinished with the pad, at least on my rifles, but I am pretty picky and can't stand any sort of edge that I can see or even feel.
