45-70 and 45-100 in a ruger no1?
Im talked to Starline on the phone and asked them about pressure in their brass for the caliber 45-70, 45-90 and 45-100. They said that they have testes all of them at the same pressure as 458 WM, about 50.000 CUP with good results. They didnt continued untill they failed becourse they thougt it was enough recoil at that pressure for the shooter.

I think that the caliber 45-100 in a ruger no1 would be a nice rifle loaded to 2200 fps with 350 grains or 400 grains bullets with low pressure and no need for compressed loads. Maybe I choose to go on that caliber.

I like the 45-70, but I like to get 2100 - 2200 fps with 350 grains or 400 grains bullets out of it without to use compressed loads. In 45-70 its to less space for most powder.
I just think about how many times I can reload these brass before they break.
Is there anyone who have experience of this?

I get over 2200 FPS from 400 grain bullets, and 2350 with 350-grain bullets in my Ruger No. 1 .45/70. Yes, the loads are compressed. There is nothing basically wrong, or even undesireable, about compressed loads. However, if you went to a longer case, you MiGHT be able to get this kind of performance without having to compress your load very much, but it would probably take more powder to do so. There's certainly nothing wrong with the longer cases, except they are harder to find, and factory ammo is not available most places. But, if you lengthen the chamber, you can still shoot a .45/70 round in it, although accuracy might be a little less. [Big Grin]
