What is the best technique for a fast hunting reload?
What technique do you use when needing a fast reload in a hunting situation. Do you keep the rifle shouldered with your left hand while working the action and reload from a belt pouch with your right. I am trying to find a safe, fast, reliable method to practise at home. Thanks, JCS

loud-n-boomerI am right-handed so for my Ruger No. 1 rifles, I used a buttstock cartridge holder with the cartriges on the right side of the stock. I reloaded with the rifle on my shoulder taking the cartridges from the front of the holder. Right after the shot, the right hand drops ther lever, sweeps back to grab a round, chambers it, and closes the action. (Reverse sides for left-handers) With practice, I got to where I could reload and shoot accurately with about 3 to 5 seconds between aimed shots.

impala#03I do a simular technique as loud-n-boomer. The two No1's I use for hunting have Murray butt stock cartridge holders with elastic cartridge loops. I LOAD THE CARTRIDGES IN THE HOLDER WITH THE BULLETS FACING UP. It is very fast to push the cartridge out of the loop and reload. The elastic in the Murray holder holds cartridges firmly, they will not slip out. Have been using this method for a number of years, have not had a cartridge slip out of the holder yet.

MikeBurkeIt will be backwards, but this is what I do with my 416 rem.

yumastepsideWith my Martini's, big and small, I hold two rounds between the fingers of the fore-stock hand like double rifle shooters do.
With smaller calibres I slip a couple under my watch band on my left hand ( I think you can even buy an ammo band like that )

Mike, great video,I guess if I just pointed everything the other direction your system would work great for me. I am just trying to get a method that has minimal extra movement and that is smooth. THANKS!

<Andrew cempa>I tried holding two rounds between the fingers of my shooting hand-I thought I broke both fingers at the first shot. Seems squeezing a pair of 416 Rigby rounds between your pinky and ring fingers then firing one creates a really painful situation under recoil!
I now simply use a belt holder and open the action, continue down, grasp and pull, insert and close, w/o takingthe gun down. Can get a few off rather hastily and still be in the game.... Tried the buttstock carrier and did not find it effective for me.
I will get a bolt gun, though, eventually. Has to be more reliable than fumbling with a round manually while beastie comes your way, with a gleam in his eye!
The double,I have determined, is out of my reach for present.

I used that rifle to kill two buffalo and some plains game in Tanzania.
The shellholder on my wrist is a beer can cuzee. My wife cut it and sewed it to fit my wrist and sewed two shellholders with material from another cuzee. Worked well in Tanzania.
