45otto1884 springfield action
I posted the same basic question over in gunsmith forum and it was suggested I post over here.
I have an 1884 trapdoor action I want to rebarrel for shooting blackpowder cartridge, hunting and maybe some fun compitition. The only cartridge I am familiar with is the .45-70. What else is out there? Is this a viable project and where can I get the steel work done?

Drifter MikeTry the 40/65. A friend of mine has one and it is a real nice round to shoot and is easy to load for.

Idaho Sharpshootermy gunsmith is just finishing up a TD in 40-65 for an all around rifle. He did it all.

Bill/OregonOtto: Several years ago I came into a beater trapdoor with virtually no rifling left in the barrel. I had it relined with a .400/.408 liner and had it chambered for .40-82, which will give you considerably more poop than the .40-65 and is now competitive on the target butts, too. I'd have Dave Crossno put a Green Mountain .400/.408 fast twist barrel on it and chamber it for his .40-82 Crossno variation. This would make a hell of a nice hunting and target gun on the trapdoor chassis.
