I want a new rifle don't need one just want one. My question to you is I have a Shilo Sharps 45-90 that I shoot about once every two years BP is a pain for me and I dont know of a smokeless load. However would you sell it for a Ruger #1 in say 450-400 if yoiu could find one. I already have one #1 in 270 and I love single shots. Let me know what you think.

Of course I'd sell it if it was an "unfun" gun for me or if I didn't want it anymore. What you might or might not buy to replace it is immaterial.

Smokeless loads are available for the 45-90 at Accurate Arms powder.

I have been told that the newest Lyman cast bullet manual also has smokeless loads for the .45-90, but if you are interested in selling, I might be interested in buying your Shilo, depending on the model and features.

Its an 1874 model with a French Grey reciver 30" oct barrel.
I know that the shilo is worth more $ wise and story wise but then so is a 450-400 caliber although not as much.

Paleohunter,

I've used AA5744 powder and cast bullets in a couple of Shilohs, including a .45-90. I worked up a load and used that rifle with very good results on plains game in South Africa in 2006.

A couple of things to remember: you can double-charge with any of the faster smokeless powders-i weigh each cartridge before it goes into the box, in addition to normal precautions of visuallly-checking each and every round before seating the bullets.

This may be a stupid question but can you fire 45-70 loads in a 45-90? or is there throat issues?
