Ruger #1 in 270 Weatherby magnum
I have an oportunity to purchase an unfired #1 in 270 Weatherby Magnum manufactured in 1998 for the RMEF.This would be my first #1 This won't be a collection gun, even though it's kind of fancy. I intend to shoot it. Does anyone have experience with a #1 in this caliber? They are no longer made, but seem to me an ideal caliber for this rifle. Why were they discontinued? Anyone know about the reamers used? Weatherby rifles are famous (notorious?) for long throats. Does anyone think that because it was espcally made for the RMEF that it may be of better quality. Any and all comments appreciated

I have a # 1 in .300 Weatherby with a fairly good figured stock that is my "moose" rifle. I don't see many # 1s for sale in Weatherby calibres so the .270 would IMHO be fairly scarce. One of the down sides is the cost of ammo., it could be the only reason for it's discountinuance. I like my .300 and I don't think you will regret getting the .270 - depending on the asking price of course. --- John303.

If the price is right i would jump all over that rifle.
especialy if you handload.
The .270 weatherby in a #1 would be a great combination.
Some #1s have acuracy problems but they are, in the vast majority of cases easy to solv.
I have long coveted a #1 in .257 Weatherby mag. I would have to have one rebarelled to get one ,Or rechamber a .25,06 But I would put about a 28 inch barrel on it.

I had a No.1 B in 270 Wby about 15 or so years ago. It shot like a house afire, but I ended up selling it. Can't remember why right now. I remember that I didn't care for the B model profile, and much prefer the S. It shot well though.

To see this rifle go to gunsinternational.com and look under ruger single shot. I am severly cyber illerate and don't know how to post the link. I have already paid cabelas $30 to ship it to Maine from Utah so I can examine it and Cabelas has taken it down from their gun library listings. And I have a few items to trade to soften the sting of a $1500 rifle. Seems a reasonable price for an "as new" engraved rifle in an attractive caliber that is no longer available. Anyone have an opinion about the price? As I said I'm new to #1s so I don't know a B profile or S from a hole in the wall. And I have read about accuracy problems in #1s, which would be particularly disapointing in a very long range, flat shooting caliber. I've heard about drilling and taping the hanger for a set screw and a product sold by Brownells to fix these problems. Limbsaver sells a barrel deresonator that works just great on my Rem 700 7mm rem Mag. If the barrel is freefloated you place the deresonator an inch or so from the muzzle. If it is not free floated you place it about an inch from the forend. Anyone tried that item on a #1 I take it that the concensus is that most of these problems can be fixed with a little fiddleing. I've only done a little messing about with guns, mainly pistols, and gunsmiths are hard to come by in Maine and New Hampshire. At least I have trouble finding one. Does anyone have a reccommendation for a professional Ruger #1 "fiddler" should I need one? Thanks for any and all comments.

Wallace; Go to Ruger's site and see the different "profiles", you'll see the difference is in the shape of the forends, barrel profiles and barrel lenghts etc. I haven't played much with my .300 - B except for free floating the barrel, shortening the fore-end, moving the sling stud out to the tip of the fore-end - it bit me once and a de-accelerator recoil pad. Future "changes" put on a front sight along with a multi-leaf rear sight, a barrel band front swivel and a Henry style fore-end when I find one. As far as price, most used "plain Jane" types in Canada go for around $800.00 or about $650.00 USD.--- John303.

From Ruger's wed site, this looks to be a B profile rifle. How do you free float a B model barrel?

It's been 15 years or so since I did that but I believe all I did was remove the pressure "hump" out of the fore-end barrel channel, near the tip. I'd need to take it off to be sure. --- John303.

Thank you, John. Please don't bother. I'll search the threads here and google for an answer.

I have my Dad's No1. Originaly in .300 Win mag, but he had it rechambered for .300 Wthby. He killed a cow elk at 400yds, and the following year, his guide finished off a clients elk at 500yds. Not real comfortable on the bench, but that all goes away on the hunt.

I've got a 1-B .270 Weatherby that is one of my all time favorite "reach out and touch 'em" rifles. Shoots the Weatherby 130 & 150 gr SP loads into about 5/8" right out of the box. I don't think you'll have any accuracy issues because all my #1's and the ones owned by my buddies all shoot better than we could ask of them. Should you need any work done however, John Lewis at Carolina Precision Rifles in Jackson , SC is a #1 specialist.
