H&R Ultra
I was looking at an H&R Ultra in .308 today and was wondering if anyone had experience with this round in the H&R and how it performed? I like single shots (plus this thing is about as ugly as a rifle can get) and wondered if this might be a decent weapon. I don't plan on shooting any factory rounds through it so (hopefully) long throats won't be as big a problem as with factory loads.

Thanks

Dennis

I don't have the 308 but do have the 30-06 in the Handi and it is a shooters right out of the box.I do handload and with 165 grain Hornady SP bullets and IMR3031 it will print from the bench 3 shots just a little under 7/8 ".
I also found not to have any problems with empty cases ejection stay away from max: loads

Not a bad little gun for the money. If you get the 308 Ultra get the one with the 22" bull barrel, much more comfortable too shoot and more accurate.

I have two converted Ultras, rebored and rechambered in 257 Roberts and 6x47 (6x222Rem Mag). Great shooters both of them.

DennisF: Three observations that I will mention about my .308 Ultra. First, I bought mine strictly for recreational shooting and I have to say that I have found the break-action design to be inconvenient for bench rest shooting. Second, mine has a very long throat - 150 grain Speers barely sit within the case when seated to touch the rifling. Lastly, for off-hand shooting, I find the forearm to be much too short - I end up holding it at the very tip - and I am not long-armed.

Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the Great Outdoors.

A very nice little rifle - I have one in 25.06and it is very accurate - I see no reason the 308 would not be just as good. I was able to put 5 rounds in about 2.5 inched at 300 yards from the bench when I was working up loads for antelope season.

I'll let you in on something - I'm not that good a shot - this rifle shoots better than I can.

It is also a great first rifle for the young hunter.
