High Wall chamberings
Was the 1885 High Wall ever chambered in a .300 Magnum?

A coworker asked me about the price of his late grandfather's Winchester High Wall in .300 Magnum. I haven't seen the gun. He said it was old, has a heavy octogonal barrel and in his words is a lever action single shot. I found a picture to show him on GunsAmerica, but I could not confirm that they ever made that gun in a .300 Magnum. From the sounds of it, it is an original 1885, but the .300 H&H wasn't produced until about 1920 the same year that the 1885 production was stopped.

What calibers were the early 1885's chambered in? Any help/correction/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I thought the 1885 was in production from 1885 to 1935 ?? In any case the rifle was chambered in just about every cartridge ever available !!! A full list would be a long one ! The 300 H&H was introduced in 1925.

Grant's book does not list a .300 mag, or any .30 bigger than the few .30-06s that were made late in the production of the 85.

Campbell's book (the first one) would be the definitive work. Of course, you could get almost anything you want from the Winchester custom shop at the time.

Could it be a .30 Army or a .30-06 rechambered for a .300 H&H?

Do you know when he got it? The more recent browning highwalls from the 80s and 90s were made in 7mm mag and (I think) 300 win mag, and had oct. barrels. They are close to the old winchesters.
