Is anyone shooting a 405 winchester, how do you like it, how does it shoot.

I just developed a desire for winchester 1885 405 Winchester.

I've got a Ruger #1-B which I had rebarreled to .405 with a 24" Douglas barrel. I shoot 400gr Woodleigh softpoints designed for the .450/.400 with enough Varget to hit 2,000 fps or 265gr flatnosed gas check bullets designed for the .41 magnum at 1,400 fps and even on occasion I shoot 300gr bullets designed for the .405!

The cartridge looks natural sliding into a single shot and certainly hits like the hammer of Thor! Try it, you'll like it!

I have a new made 1895 Wnchester Takedown.
I like it a lot. I have not taken any game with it yet, but I have taken deer and several pigs with a 300gr bullet at @2330 from my 450/400 double. Similar ballistics to the 405. It has been very effective.

I will use the 405 this deer season in TX and for black bear in Idaho.

It would be a great choice for a single shot.

My .405 is a bolt action...a M95 Winchester barrel on an '03 action,

I have a fairly large number of older Lyman/Ideal and other moulds for it, but find myself shooting mainly jacketed bullets these days (don't seem to have time to cast anymore).

One of the first things I learned regards loads for my rifle is that it will only group about 2-1/2"-to-3" at 100 yards with the Barnes "Original" bullets, no matter what the powders or charge weights. For whatever reasons, though it regularly groups the Barnes-X 300 gr. bullets in about an inch, once in a while slightly less. (I am talking 5-shot groups here.)

I figure the difference is probably inadequate twist for the Barnes "originals", as they are 400 gr. bullets, while the Barnes-X which my gun likes are 300 grs. weight

I have an H&R Target that's been rechambered and bored to .405 Win, shoots better than I can, the 300gr Hornady SP shoots best with a good charge of Benchmark at 2435fps. I tried the discontinued 350gr XFB, but it didn't work out, got patterns instead of groups!!

I can get the 400gr Woodleigh weldcores under an inch at 100yds. The 400gr Woodleigh solids don't do quite as well. The 300gr Hornady bullets will shoot a bit over an inch but didn't hold up well when shot into water (300gr varmint bullet? ). The 300gr Barnes X bullets shot under an inch but really fouled the bore while the 350gr Barnes X didn't foul but shot 3" groups.

YMMV but the Woodleigh will shoot plumb thru a blue wildebeest at 30yards.

I was wonderin how well the Hornady bullet would perform, sounds like not very well! I've thought about the Northforks, anyone tried em?

The NF shoots superb in my 375 HH and also my 470 NE.

I just got a winchester 1885 45/70 and trying to get it to shoot without success, just ordered the winchester 1885 in 405, I will probably order some NF for both rifles.

the NF bullets are great.
