Custom safety on Ruger No1 and trigger mods.
Hi all.
I have just finished making a recessed safety and modifying the trigger, on a Ruger No1.

The trigger on this one is Aluminium, so I screw a piece of rod, to the back of it and put a set screw through that, so the depth of sear engagement can be adjusted. On the steel ones I just weld a piece on.

I cut an 8mm wide recess, into the top of the tang, then made a new safety blank and fitted it to the inner workings.

Making sure the everything was working smoothly, I then shaped the top of the new streamlined safety. It will be well clear of the ejected cases and I think, that it looks a lot better. To me, the shitty safety knob, on the Rugers, has always seemed like it was an after thought and was designed by an idiot.

It took me a few days to come up with the design, but I wanted something different. It wouldn't be 'Custom' otherwise.  Wink

Shaped, buffed and in the Safe position.

In the Fire position.

Finished and in the engraving block.

Nice little 'S' in the recess.

Chalk & cheese.

The tang is getting blued and the safety has been case hardened and polished.

Beautifull, that is how a safety on the No1 should look.

That's a really nice looking safety. I have to trim the front part of mine as the cases hit it every time.

afro408: A very neat job except: your "S" appears to be 180 degrees out of rotation to my eye. Just nit-picking of course.

Hi Stocker Smiler
Someone finally picked up on it Smiler
I didn't check the orientation of the punch, before I struck it. Oops.

Actually with the quality of that safety I think the lettering deserves to be engraved in gold....of course then a new stock with a nice stick of timber etc... Big Grin

Great work Afro.

I could be quite tempted to buy one of those safeties if you decide on a production run.

Regards,

Robert

lol I knew there was a reason for it being that way Smiler

Rockdoc.....Thanks mate.
Gold inlay could be arranged.

rnovi.....For years and years, I was involved with production runs, when I was employed as a Toolmaker and earlier in the furniture trade and I'm not interested in that anymore. Anyway, doing that, would negate their uniqueness.

This safety button is a work of art. For those of us with no talent there is an option. I just installed one of the safeties offered by Trop Gun Shop for $60 on my 9.3x74. Big improvement and empties don't hang up. Check it out on their web site.
