Scoping a rebarrelled Ruger #1
Looking for options: I have a Ruger #1b in 300 Win mag. I would like to have the rifle rebarreled with a heavy Shilen Sendero contour barrel in the same calibur. My question is, how would I go about obtaining scope bases for the new barrel?

jim kobe has done a few for me by both modifying the original ramp(no fun) or modifying tally bases

Finding a scope that works on a #1 is a challenge. I've found the discontinued Conquest 3x9 is my best option. Extension rings work too. It is difficult to find a scope that will go far enough rearward.

Tallys don't please everyones eye and they can have problems with recoil.

EAW mounts sold by New England Custom Guns are the way to go.

If you have a lot of coin to throw at this project contact Joseph Smithson. He builds the nicest scope mounts known to man.

Have done couple and used the Ruger factory rib.
Available from Brownells and do a little research as to the OD of the barrel you are going to fit and come as close as you can with factory rib. Does require using Ruger rings, but worked out fine for me. The "tech rep" at Brownells was helpful on this project. Just a suggestion.

I just whittled out a quarter rib to accept Talley rings. I can't see how these would have trouble handling recoil since both rings are captive and there is a substantial recoil stop. I attached the Rib with six 8x40 screws and some epoxy and it should stay put OK.
On another No. One, I milled a half Octagon barrel but left a rib on top which could be drilled and tapped for any equal-height bases, Worked out fine and made a good base for a rear sight.
If I was to do it again, I think I would make the rib so that it extended back over the receiver ring so I could located the scope a bit further back. As it is, many modern scopes are too short in the tube to sit where I would like. I had intended to put a 4x Leupold on my rifle but it just didn't work out. A 3x, with it's straight tube, would be fine. Right now, it wears an old Bushnell Scopechief 4x which is a pretty good scope and fits well. I wish Leupold would lengthen their tube a little bit. Take a look at www.steveearleproducts.com

If you give him the spacing distance and barrel diameter at both, he can set you up with the correct blocks.

You will note that he offers the old style scope bases/blocks in about forty heights. They would let you use Kelbly or Talley rings, which I highly recommend.

He also shows a custom one-piece base which I used on a Borchardt.

Ruger makes offset rings which help quite a bit!

i took a brand new s.s. 7 rem.mag and rebarreled it to a 257 weatherby mag with a 27 inch bonx barrel had straightline custom do the work he does a lot of 1000 yard bench rest rifles too,had a piccantiny base installed then put a 5 1/2-25x56 niteforce scope on this number ruger one gun shoots great .I use 72 grains reloader 22,100grain swift aframe bullets,215 fed mag primers, nosler brass this gun shots 3800 fps with this load.this load may be high pressure for some guns, ruger ones have a stronger action so number ones can handle more pressure.had it pressure test at under 56,000 sami. this 257 w. mag really smacks deer and antelope at long distances. straitline custom guns does a lot of rebarreling his name is greg > 320-272-4897 oneshotpete
