Value question Ruger No.3
What do you think that a 99% Ruger No.3 chambered in 30-40 Krag is worth?

In the past six months I have seen a very nice No 3 30-40 for sale here in Alaska at two different gun shows for $650 and it hasn't sold.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Thanks, looking on Gunbroker and Guns International I can't seem to sort by completed sales so I can't see what they actually sold for.

frank,
on gunbroker it is a bit easier to find sold items in the advanced search, just open the completed auctions tab. I just found 4 number 3's that sold 22 hornets, 223 and 45/70. $700 to $795. hope that helps.

Thanks Max,

The "Advanced" link was the one I was missing, I knew that it was somewhere.

The 30-40 has less production numbers than the 22 Hornet and last year I sold my #3 Hornet, very slightly used, with box and all papers for $850.00. So, I would start about $950 if I owned it.

I'm looking at buying one that the guy wants $650 for.

If you are planning on shooting it where are you going to get ammo? I would like to have one myself, but ammo is hard to get. Is is easier to get 307 Winchester and 303 savage than 30-40 Krag (I have a 307 and 303).

I wish it was free market here in Wisconsin I would buy it. But then I have several hundred brand new 30-40 Wi brass laying around.

I'm going to pass on it. I need a another cartridge to reload for like I need a hole in the head, even though Graf's has brass in stock. Smiler

If you've got the spare cash, I think you are making a mistake not to buy it. As a rare caliber, it will certainly attract a Ruger collector on Gunbroker at a much higher price IMO.

Selway Armory has PCI .30-40 Krag ammo in stock at $37/box. Not cheap, but available.

Frank, Gunbroker has many listings for 30-40 Krag ammunition....looks like $50/box or so.

Frank, for that price, a rechambering and an extractor alteration would make a dandy little .300 H&H carbine. Or you could go 30 Blaser!

I think the No.3s are great for retro cartridges. I have a .375 Winchester No.3 rechambered to .375 NE 2-1/2". If I had a .30-40 it would become a .300 H&H FL Magnum.

He changed his Ad to say "OBO" so I made him an offer.

Edit:

He accepted my offer.

All you guys are enablers and I need a 12 step program.

Sweet, I got one in .375 Win, makes a fine companion to my Big Bore 94.

The .30-40 would make a dandy little deer getter.

Jaquas Fine Guns have/had a No.3/223 Rem. past summer and they were stuck on just over $900.00
Already have one customized in 45/70 w/ much heavier/longer barrel than original factory offering and wanted their No.3 to just add longer heavier barrel in 223 for varmint hunting. Have Unertl scopes and use them on my No.1 and would have made a good combo, but could not bring myself to spend that much even though the gun was in like new condition. They are a fine, unique, firearm and hope it works out for you.

303 British brass into a 30-40 FL sizing die and you've got 30-40 brass. Comes out slightly shorter than the Krag, but works just fine.

I want so bad. Yes I have brass. You did good Frank.

I have a 30-40 No 3 with No 1 wood. The lever needs bent a little to make the stock feel right. I installed Weaver bases and replaced the irons with XS front and aperture rear. Plus I use a scout scope and a Doctor Optic red dot in Weaver mounts. It's my favorite deer/hog gun.

I also have 22 Hornet and .375Win No3s with No 1 wood.

I was thinking about doing the same thing. There's Treebone Carving in Nevada that does some nice work and RJ Renner (in Atkinson's thread) does some impressive stuff with the Ruger single shots.

In reality though, it will probably just sit in my safe.

I forgot to mention that I pulled the no3 wood, sent it back to Ruger who restocked it with No 1 wood for $325. I had all three guns done that way.

That's interesting, I wonder if they still do that. I'll have to check.

Hornady makes 30-40 ammo with 180 grain bullets, and brass too. They make relatively cheap 220 grain cup-n-core .308” bullets as well.
