cummins cowboydiffernces in standard wt and heavy wt NEF barrels
I was wondering what the difference in accuracy is between the standard and heavy barrels on the NEFs. I am mainly referring to the 223. I was pretty set on getting a heavy barrel 223 for my new handi. but I don't want it to be too big and cumbersome. do you guys think there is a big difference in the regular and heavy barrels as far as accuracy goes. also when you send in for a new barrel do most come with a scope base and hammer extension if applicable or do you need to order that seperate

Actually they do offer ultra lite barrels. In 223 and 243 I believe.

snowboundThe barrel on the standard Handi is thick and stiff enough for some very good accuracy..In my own opinion, in the NEF, I do not see where anything is really gained by the real heavy barrel. The harmonics may be more stable but in my case, the rifles will shoot much better than I can with a standard barrel..I have worked up many loads in the .280 with the 175 grain Hornady bullets that are (on the best day) .75" with a five shot group at 100 meters...SB

pagrisI find this to be an interesting question. I own a .308 Ultra and it, by far, has the heaviest (ie thickest) barrel of any firearm that I own. Exactly how much heavier are the H&R bull barrels? I can't imagine anyone wanting a heavier barrel unless they are using the rifle strictly for target shooting or some specialized varmit hunting (like you might do with a .223). In fact, I have wondered why H&R hasn't offered a light-weight barrel version of some of their chamberings. Can anyone tell us some dimensional differences between the two barrel types?

HandRtalk338A heavy barrel won't warp as much as it gets hot from shooting. I guess what i'm saying is, it just takes longer for it to start warping from excessive heat, which causes you bullet to have a different POI. Personally I like the extra weight of the heavy barrel I have. It helps me steady my shot more when shooting freehand. Plus I like the look of the Ultra models. I've got the .223 Ultra, .243 Ultra, and .444 Ultra.
