I'm new to the forum and was just wondering how many Ruger fans are out there? I just bought my first two No. 1's earlier this year. They're both 1B's and one is chambered in .243 and it looks to be a real shooter. I just got my dies and other reloading supplies for it today. Had a 5 shot group less then an inch with Federal Vita-shock ammo. My latest is a .220 swift and I will start loading for it tonight. I would like to get one in .260 but I don't believe that Ruger ever offered that caliber in a B. Any suggestions?

welcome, there are lot's of us. 1V .220 swift, 1B 30-06, 1RSI .270. 1B 45-70

I have allot of rifles, but the Ruger #1 in .223 is the "go to" rifle for me.

It has the accuracy, safety, and falling block action I like.

I love my 98 Mausers, but I like shooting my #1s [.223, 7mmMag, .270] better.

I'm a big fan of #1's ..... I have 13. Since Farquharsons cost more than getting rid of a bad wife, #1's are the next best thing. My favorites are .375 H&H, .405 Win., 9.3X74R and the 450/400's ........ oh yeah, the 7X57 - a beautiful little rifle.

They can become an addiction.

I’ve loved the No.1 for a number of years. Bought my first one in 1976 (the centennial year, that’s the only reason I can remember it).

Rifles have come and gone since then but I still own 5 of them and the No. 1 is the only center fire rifle I hunt with.

Mine is a 404 Jeffery.

octave: is your #1 a factory original .404 J ? If so, have you shot it, and does it do OK with standard .404 loads, i.e., .423 bullets & commercial cases ? I recently acquired one, and have heard that the bores vary in size, and sometimes the chambers are not standard - hence, Ruger quit making them. What's your experience ?

I really like mine. So far I've got a .25-06, .338Win Mag, .405Winchester, a custom .450/.400 3" NE, and a .500 Jeffries in the development stage. I'd like the 9.3 too but it seems pretty close to the .338.

Every body has there favorites, mine is the #1A. I have a 7X57 and it shoots great !

Well have a .243 myself, and a 45/70 (my favorite). Guess I need an in between one at least. 30-06 or 300 mag maybe. Then I keep tinkering with the idea of a .375 Holland and Holland.

45/70 Govt. stainless, laminated stock. Leupold 1.5 - 6x 32 mm. heavy reticle.

I'm not a recoil weenie, but this is the one gun that makes me "pull away," grit my teeth, and flinch.

Used for Roosevelt elk in Oregon Coastal woods.

I am definitely a Ruger Single-Shot fan. The main reason is because I can afford them, but not the Dakota # 10!

I currently have a 7X57mm 1A, a 7mm Rem. Mag. 1B, a .30/'06 1B, a .375 H&H 1H, a .45/70 1S, and a No. 3 in .30/40 Krag. Years back, I also had a very accurate 1V in .25/'06. All of these are very good shooters.

There is a Ruger No.1 group at Yahoo. They pass around a lot of good information. The membership consists of shooters, collectors, and people who just have a general interest in the No. 1 rifles.

I've been on the yahoo site and while its gots lots of good info, I find it THE HARDEST site to navigate. Maybe its just me, but its a royal PITA!! Also I made a mistake on my original post when I said that both of my No.1's were B models. The 220 swift is actually a V model with the heavy barrel. I missed out on another 1 B the other day at Bass Pro. They had a used one in .280 and I coulda got it for 529.00 but I snoozed and lost. Oh well, can't buy 'em all but it'd sure be fun trying!!!

Frank. The way I understand it, Ruger chambered the rifles to SAAMI specs, but the foreign made ammo didn't match creating headspace problems. I'm more inclined to think Ruger screwed up, but what do I know? Mine seems to be OK, but what I do is load up a cast bullet jammed into the rifling with a fairly stiff load and just fireform the brass to my chamber. The I set up the sizing die the resize the brass to match my chamber. Regardless of whether the screw up is Ruger's fault ot the brass maker's fault, this fixes the problem for me. I have mine sighted in to be one inch high at 50 yards. It'll be on at 100, and considering what the round was designed for, that set up works for me. Now my big problem is deciding whether grab it or my #1 in .416 Rigby the next time a marauding T-rex decides to eat my dogs.
I get conflicting reports, but from what I've heard, there were only 400 #1s in .404 jefery and between people exchanging them for another caliber rifle or getting refund, something like only about 40 of those rifles remain in private hands. if that's true, it makes that rifle a good one to hang on to.

Ruger's online catalog doesn't list any 6.5 mm No. 1 rifles, so a simple rechamber is not in the picture. Rebarreling is pretty expensive - you can buy a new rifle for less than a donor and a barrel - but a good gunsmith can do it.

Since you have a V and a B, why not an RSI? 7x57 is a good traditional caliber for that rifle style, and will kill anything a .260 will.

If you want a #1 6.5 bad enough you can find a used 243 Win and have it rebored. Only the neck and throat would need to be done to make it 260 Rem.

I have a 26" 243 barrel that I will have rebored to and chambered to 6.5x284. I found a new Ruger barrel in 7x57 and the 243 became a 7x57. The rebore job is quite resonable and these cut rifled barrels are very good shooters.

I have two rebored rifles in 6x47 and 257 Roberts both were rebored from 223 Rem both are are super accurate H&R break open rifles.

The reason I'd like a No.1 in .260 is that I've already got a 77 in that particular caliber and I really like it.

Hi Frank, yes mine is a factorty built rifle, I have not fired it yet but have about 50 rounds of Kynock ammo I am looking forward to putting thru it.

Cobrajet I'm with you on the 260 and you'll probably have to do what I did and have a no 1 rebarrelled. I had a 260 Pac-Nor barrel put on one a couple years ago and I love it. It's a 27 inch heavy and not really suitable for hunting but a pleasure to shoot and has become the rifle I most often choose for relaxation.

I have two now and have just ordered my 3rd. #1 270 win #2 577NE and the new one I have just ordered the barreled action is a 416 Rigby, that I plan on making a full length forearm for. I have always loved them, and wished that I had not gotten rid of the ones that I had, 257 Roberts, 243, 375 H&H, but I will replace them one day. They are great rifles as long as you change out the butt pad.

You can spend alot more for a fine single shot (Hagn, Dakota, Searcy, etc.) but still not get a better looking or stronger rifle. For a bolt gun, make mine a custom Mauser or derivative. For a single shot, I'll take the everyday Ruger.

I'm inclined to agree with you, but the other day at the range, I finally got to see a Dakota 10 up close and personal. The fellow let me handle it, and, well let's say it was lust at first touch. Kind of like comparing a Ford GT-40 to a Mack truck. If I could swing the money, I'd get me one of those. I'll admit they're way over priced, but dammit, they sure are pretty.

Ruger NO. 1 is my favorite rifle. I own two NO. 1 A-B 270 Win. and 1-B in 243. I would love to collect more of these but costs are quite prohibitive.

The same thing happened to me. One of my hunting buddies traded his UNFIRED original Kimber .416 Rigby for a Dakota # 10 in 7X57mm. What a fantastic beauty! It can't weigh more than 6 pounds with a 2X-7X leupold on it.....

Just got back from the gunshow in Springfield, Missouri and sure saw some nice No.1's. Probably more there this time than in any time in the past. A couple of pretty good deals too. A nice 1B in .257 Roberts for less then 6 and a 6mm for 589.00 Most however were in the 625-675 range. Ended up buying a Caldwell "The Rock" rest,a plastic case for the above rest, a Wheeler Engineering torque screwdriver and a set of Lee powder scoops.

I had bought my #1 new. took it straight to a gun smith and had it rechambered for the 7MM STW. It's the rifle that I deer hunt with most.

BTW, FYI, Lipseys.com has a special run of 250 of 6.5x55 1K-A I believe is what they call it, stainless/walnut sporter sights, 22"....might be what you want.

Got a No.1-S in 45/70, & a No.1-B in 25-06. Both about 1988 vintage & good shooters.

A No.1-A in 7x57 of about the same vintage, is on my short (next up) list....

and my most recent one I bought used as a 243 and had rechambered to 243 AI. This one is just plain fun.

I've got a #1 in a 45/70, and I love it. The actions are so well made, that you can really load up on any cal, particularly the 45/70's. I had a 405 win as well, but I traded it. They are all very accurate in my experience, and the only negative press I've read is that recoil on the big bores can be a little rough (i'm guessing because of the stock design). I've never notived it when jacking up my 45/70 or when I shot my 405, but it might be an issue with a 458 lott (although all Lotts kick like a mother off the bench). I'm actually in the market for a 450/400 3in... anybody listening?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is A1? A rechambering? Like an improved? Like a .22 22 Hornet to K-Hornet?

My .280 Remington in Ruger #1 is extremely accurate. I wish I would have bought one in 7mm STW before they quit doing that.
