LA7mmWhere to go for Ruger #1 wood
Gentlemen...
I'm looking for a wood stock for a #1B. It's chambered to 25.06 and before it was given to me the original stock was removed and sold and replaced with a Bell & Carlson plastic job. Looking to get it back to original.
Any insight as to where I might go would be appreciated. I'm not looking for a custom stock, just a used factory stock or the like.
Thanks,

fla3006I've seen them on ebay. You could also try the other sites (gunbroker, auctionarms, gunsamerica).

Ruger # 1LA7mm,
If you don't have any luck here try the Ruger # 1 group at:
www.groups.yahoo.com/group/RUGER-1 This is a dedicated group about 475 Ruger # 1 people so your
chances of finding most anything for a # 1 would be great.

congomikeIf you call Ruger, and give them the serial number of the gun, they will sell you the original style stock. What I mean by this, is if you have a 1B they won't, or at least in the past wouldn't, sell you wood for a 1H or A. They are a bit more reasonable than any of the other "aftermarket" stocks since they will fit it properly and it is finished and checkered.
You can get lucky on eBay or one of the other auction sites, but then you have no idea of what the condition really is until you get it and may or may not have to do some fitting.

Mark_StrattonI build several #1 rifles a year. Back in the good old days (before this year) I could buy a barreled action from Brownells for about $475. In the latest catalog they raised the price to $625 or so. I can buy a complete rifle for $624. If you interest in the #1 wood, send me an email and I will place you on the list. I need only the action, so I can order any #1.

Frank BellerMark: Why won't Ruger sell you another Model's wood for your #1 ? Also, I recently acquired an unbarreled action from a Ruger #1 .25-06 that was a heavy-barreled target model; Ruger would only replace a barrel that was a target heavy barrel. WHY ..... are there fitting issues for the barrel and/or wood ? Thanks for any help.
Who can re-barrel my action with a sporter weight .303 British barrel ?

Mark_StrattonFrank,
Ruger is a strange outfit, if you buy a barreled action, they won't sell you any wood at all. If you want new wood on a complete rifle, you must send the rifle back to the factory and they will do all the work. If you have added any custom features like a trigger, they will restore the rifle to ship from the factory standards. They keep track of the serial numbers and if it was sold as a barreled action, they won't sell you any wood at all. There is a letter in each shipping box that states this. I'm buying rifles from a wholesaler and he buys complete rifles from Ruger. Switching wood really isn't possibe.
Brownell's made me buy complete rifles because they charge more for a barreled action than I can buy a complete rifle for.

LA7mmthanks for all the input. I'm leaning toward calling Ruger directly with the serial number an having them send me a laminate stock in black & grey unless someone out there has an extra nice take-off or custom, for which they'd be willing take my B&C plus some cash...

Paul BRuger will sell you a stock, but you'll have to send the gun to them. They're real assholes that way.

I ran into that situation on a Ruger 77.
Paul B.
please let us know how much $ Ruger charges for a #1 stock when you send them your barreled action. I want a #1 stock for my #3 so...maybe I'll send them my #1 barreled action, get the new stock, make the lever mods, and put it on my #3. I'm a little surprised Ruger would fall for such an obvious ploy.

El DeguelloLike I said, TREEBONE CARVING.......
quote:
For those foillowing the saga. I got the Ruger #1 all back together, now to get it shooting.
The stock was carved by George Petterson at Treebone Carving, and the engraving was done by a local named Kenny Majors, the barrel work was done by Greg Tannel, the stock work including the inletted sling swivels, checkering and oil finish is by Tim Smith Lyons.

El Deguello...
Treebone (George Peterson) does nice work and is a good choice for a high quality custom stock. In fact I just finished inletting a Clerke highwall action into one of his Remington rolling block silhouette pattern buttstocks. Nice guy to deal with and his website has lots of useful tips on stock fitting.
I (personally) really like the factory Ruger #1 stock design and consider it equal to other custom shapes...you just don't get the extra fancy wood. Also, I really don't want to put a lot of money into my #3 and factory replacement stocks are usually cheaper.
Your #1 is beautiful! I missed the previous discussions about the project so...
Is it all stainless or french grey, caliber, etc.?
Wishing you decent shooting weather.

LA7mmJon... the stocks from Ruger run about $200.00 - $225.00 or so depending on whether you order a laminate (black/grey) or walnut stock. The instructions I read on their web-site said you just need to send the gun's serial number with the stock order, not the whole gun.
LA7mm...
Ok, thanks for doing the research. I'll be calling them soon with a serial # and we'll see what happens.

degoinsfwiw, i tried to get them to sell me a walnut stock for my stainless 405 2 years ago and i was told the rifle would have to be sent in and that they would not provide a walnut stock for a stainless rifle.......only laminate. maybe thier policy has changed since then....i hope so.
DRSS
Phoned Ruger today.
You MUST send the barreled action to get a replacement stock as they consider it a "factory installed part". A standard walnut stock set is $198.00. So, with shipping & insurance the cost would be about $250.00 and take 6 to 8 weeks.

MntngoatI had the factory restock my #1, and requested a nice piece of walnut as I was giving the rifle as a gift to my pops.
Here is what I ended up with.
