Re: Recoil pad install info needed
Hi Gents,

I have a question on this subject: How do you keep from buggering up the pad when installing the screws? Seems the screwdrivers like to chew up the pads?

The installation of a recoil pad on a finished rifle is one of the most difficult procedures to perform "properly" IMO..Many smiths do it, but one in a million can do it to suit me...In fact a recoil pad should be sanded and finish with the wood to be perfect, no other way, but a few can come pretty close...Its not a job for amateurs and that is for sure...

well i'm ready to give this a go. from my limited reading it looks like a belt sander and a jig may be the way to go. which jigs work best and what grit and type of paper do you use on the sander.

any input on the process, tools, do's and do not's as well as any on line instructions that i can reference would be helpful.

thanks,

ned

Check out this link to a great pad jig, which I manufacture.
They are also available thru Brownells. Has very thorough, illustrated intructions, and is very user friendly, even for a novice. It can be used with a belt, or disc sander, or both in combination (my preferred method); belt with medium cut sandpaper to rough, and disc with fine sandpaper to finish, if desired.
Best regards for a successful pad job no matter what method you choose. Joe
