Persian Mausers
I have a chance to get a # matched Persian Mauser M98 barreled action for a very reasonable price.

I would like to use it for a re-chamber job and plan to cut the barrel off to 26-27".

I would like to have the following questions answered.

Is this a "standard" length (3.315" magazine length) action?

Is this an "alloy" action?

Is this a "large ring, large thread " action?

I have heard that these are high quality actions with excllent fit and finish. Would this be a good candidate for a semi custom hunting rifle. Are there a lot of crests and markings that would look unsuitable on a sporting rifle?

Since you mentioned cutting the barrel back to 26 inches, you are probably dealing with a Model 98/29 long rifle. The 98/29 is a standard length, large ring Mauser made by BRNO in Czechoslovakia between 1931 and 1938. Keep in mind that Persia/Iran also used a Model 95 small ring Mauser, the VZ-24 Mauser, and an Iranian-made Model 49 Mauser.

You can do anything with the 98/29 that you can do with a VZ-24.

if it is a 98/29 it is one of the finest military mausers ever made, bascially the same as a vz24 just usually in better shape and slightly better finished. I think the 98/29 is a close second to the argintine mauser mainly because of the better bottom metal.
