Rust bluing question - pins, screws and hardware
How does one deal with the small stuff when doing a rust blue? Do they get rust blued too and if so anything special, like putting them on a piece of felt or a piece of screen?

Just wondering about a detail I hadn't thought of before.

Nitre blue the screws, pins and springs. A dazzling contrast that REALLY looks good.

Daniel M--

Nitre bluing is done by soaking the parts in melted Potassium Nitrate (Salt Peter) for a very few minutes. It's hazardous due to the high temperatures involved.

Brownell's used to have all the stuff but I don't have a current catalog to see if they still do.

It's worthwhile to send the parts off to Doug Turnbull and have him do it. You'll want a very fine finish....600 or higher...it works best where there is little wear...It's fairly fragile but *can* last for many years.
