Throat Erosion
Maybe I'm the only one who is aware of the fact that 'erosion' [wearing away] is not what happens .It's a matter of the steel absorbing carbon from the hot gases.
There was [it's been a while ] a detailed metallurgical examination to demonstrate that. Does anyone have a copy ? Or at least know the author's name and title of the report ?
A moot point ? How can you treat the disease if you don't know the cause ?

So how do you propose to cure the disease? Methinks there is no cure .

U.S. Army Ordnance engineers solved the problem many years ago; in machine guns, the problem is particularly bad as you can imagine; STELLITE liners for the first ten inches or so of .50 BMG barrels. Chrome plating helps some but not much.
Otherwise, you can't do anything about it. Yes, we all know it is not "wear" from the bullets that causes throat erosion. If it was from bullets, or velocity, then the muzzle would wear out first, which never happens. In tank cannons, we used to get muzzle "belling", in which the barrel would turn oval, but no wear.

This article makes reference to a "carburizing" effect.

Thanks, that's the name I was trying to remember ,Creighton Audette.
Craigster, keeping the barrel cool - slower burning powder, more time between shots.
