I believe these rifles were government purchased and never used. They finally wound up as awards for competitive rifle matches in the Navy and Marine Corp, thus the military acceptance cartouche.

i saw my first (and only) at the Saxet gun show in Robstown Tx, a couple months ago.... at first glance, i thought it was a rem 30, then after picking it up, i saw what it was... priced at right around $1400....

-a very few were sold on the civilian market, the majority of them, a couple thousand I think, were acquired as you describe; WW2 got in the way of their further production.

I think that total production of the 720 was in the area of 2100 guns. Not sure how many were military awards but lately more of them crop up than the plain ones. I got a plain one last year at auction, the stock had been poorly refinished so it may end up a custom someday.

It's my impression that most of these were 'award rifles' and of course many of the after-WW2 award winners are now beginning to fall off their perches....
