Martin@HinSmoke pot
Gentleman ;
I need a smoke pot, like as in something that produces soot to smoke parts for fitting.
I now use a candle or persian blue and it is not ideal.
Tryed a kerosine lamp, but when I need it it is empty.
Anybody any idea's
Thanks Martin

Dall85I use an alcohol burners filled with kerosene or lamp oil (lamp oil is available at most hardware stores). Alcohol burners can be bought on eBay for $5-10 bucks.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Glass-Alco...?hash=item2ea9f4d4d6There is a lot less evaporation with lamp oil for some reason.

LesBrooksI used a Zippo lighter for years and then got a cheap lamp in a garage sale for my smoke pot. The lighter is handy to have ready at all times.

merlinrongo to the gas station and get some plain jane diesel fuel. kerosine is rendered to burn cleaner than diesel for home heating, so you won't get as much soot off of it.

CAS IIGiven some of the posts on this forum (not this thread), I think that several here must smoke pot daily.

dirtyjimgo down to wally world & find the oil lamps. buy a botle of lamp oil & a pack of wicks. its about $5.00 for the lamp oil & wicks. then go to the jelly isle & there will be a small jar of grape gelly thats about 4" tall & 1 1/2" dia.
eat the jelly with some toast then cut a slot in the lid for the wick, dump about 1" of olamp oil in the bottom of the jar then you got a nice soot lamp & you get to eat toast & jelly

Martin@HinThank you all for the info.
Looked for alc.burners, none to be found in this neck of the woods.
I was looking for some thing that stops evaporation, since my small shop has the heater running year around.
I like the Zippo, the diesel fuel and will check Brownell ( dispite it would dubbel the price by the time it gets here.)
Thanks again Martin

Martin@HinJim this is good, realy good .
We do have a wally store but it is small but I should be able to find a jar(glass ? ) some wick (cotton?) and some diesel fuel.
If not in use I can use the lid of the second jar to seal it of.
That would work out just fine since I looove grape gelly.
Thanks Martin

Duane WiebeAll "pots" good for the lungs? You really want a tight fit, try copper sulfate mixed in a weak nitric acid solution.
Apply to a clean, degreased part and you'll get the thnnest plating of copper

This might be a really dumb question(most of my questions are), but I have to ask.....
How do you remove the "thin copper plating" form the metal?

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

kcstottI just use my Acetylene torch. Just fire it up and coat the part in soot.
If you have a good paint store around or an arts supply get some lamp black powder and mix with mineral oil into a paste. Ratio = Lots of lamp black and very little oil.
Works great and is pretty much inert.

MarkThe best and most convenient way that I have found to smoke things is to use masking tape.
Tear a piece off, fold it in half (either back on itself or lengthwise), light one end like a candle, and use it to smoke away.
Does a really good job and there is usually a roll handy somewhere nearby.
And like virtually everyone else, I had this mental image when I clicked on the thread:
for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

Mike_Dettorre...always before I read the posts on AR...helps me understand the logic in most of them
MikeLegistine actu quod scripsi?
Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Chris K'nerrI use inletting fluid. A black substance thinned with Naptha. Is sooting that much better? Might be a little thinner, but cetainly not as easy or conveniant.
Am I missing something?
Thank,
Chris

kcstottSooting does one thing better then Persian blue or inletting black does. Because the soot is so thin and fragile, it can show you the faintest of contacts. if there is an area that is just kissing the action it may not show very well with a liquid brushed on paste but soot has a very uniform finish that allows the slightest mark to be readily seen.

Mark NealTake a small tin can with a screw lid (Rectangular type with a small 1/2 " lid). The 4oz ones that spirit wood dyes come in are good because they have a wax card gasket.
Drill a 5/32 hole in the lid. Pull through a cotton wick ( piece of cotton rag twisted will do). Half fill the can with white spirit (turpentine substitute) test light and trim wick accordingly. It should go out if you flap your hand across the top (saves blowing out).
By using the tin on the bench you can move the part over the smoke or move the smoke under the part as required by holding the tin.
