6-40. If you are near a well-stocked ACE Hardware store, they usually carry them.

Here is a twelve pak:

Bob,
Do they carry them in "TORX SCREWS" ??? Brownells don;t appear to be Torx?? I think Im looking for a 6-40x1/4 Torx for Ruger rings,,I found them a Graffs for almost $4.00 each, and that sounds ridiculas as most gun screws are about that for a dozen...

Ray, Brownells calls them socket head which I am guessing is Torx. A #10 if memory serves.

Socket heads are horrible, strip one and its a pain to remove, The Torx is the best thing since sliced white bread IMHO. Midway has them but at near 4.00 each, what a scam that is..

That's the cost of doin' business these days! I'm no fan of Midway, but there has to be profit in every business, or the business won't be there very long.

You young fellers kill me; what did we do back in the dark ages when all gun screws were Slotted Head? Hell, most of my rifles and scope rings, have original, 1960s era, slotted head screws. Probably hand forged out of wrought iron. No scopes have fallen off yet.

That's true but the slotted head screw is easily the worst head design. It's easy to see why it was used for so long....
It was easy to cut
My strait screwdrivers are mostly pry bars in today's world.

Not sure if it's the "wprst desisgn" One can sill toque up a slotted head tighter than you can either torx or allen head....and no lmatter where you are in the world, you CAN find a plain screwdriver in case you rally need it.

On a fine firearm, they are the only act in own. Havng said that, the torx or allen don't need to be "timed"

Torx screw on guns are used for those inexperienced and impatient guys who do not use the proper shaped screwdrivers, and do not how know to properly torque slotted head screws.
I have no issues with them, and they were used for the first two centuries of gun work. However we have all seen them wallowed out and otherwise abused. Torx prevents that. So, the craftsmen will continue to use slotted heads; the hacks, will use torx.

The slotted screw is several hundred years old.....

Why? Not because it was elegant but because it was easy to make and even easier to make look like crap.

I could give two shits if you don't like hex heads or torx heads but they are by far a better mousetrap then a slotted screw.

Wow, whats great about a slotted screw, I suppose it impresses gunsmiths more than anyone else, but boys its time to get yourself a full time job and go to work...The Torx is the best thing since sliced white bread, they last forever and never look used...

I know how to use a screw driver, and tighten a slot screw as well as the best, I still prefer the torx for certain uses and for scope base screws and ring screws..and I'm always swapping scopes and rings and bases, and in time unless you are pure of heart than I, you will mar the slotted screw head to one degree or the other and we all know the "gunsmith secret" to not tighten the slotted screw too tight! jumping

Torx for scope mounts are fine. For the bottom metal, slotted are more classy. To each his own.

well, I can't argue that, slotted screws are fine on bottom metal IMO on a custom rifle if the smith brings them tight at North and south..but Ive never seen a torx that large, so ????? maybe I should check that out..I wasn't impressed with Hex for bottom metal or butt plate, the slotted screw has its place, but not for base or rings for scope is all I'm saying..

You're talking shit about screws? Did you fall asleep in the pouring rain? I never saw a downpour like I did in central Missouri. It rained horses and cows for 5 hours straight. Whatever.

I've seen snooty people try to preach what is and what isn't "class" but calling a screw classy is hilarious. All you need is a few more like that and you can hit the Improv

Heym SR20
Torx are fantastic for engineering purposes - engines, cars, aeroplanes, dishwashers, etc. they pretty damn good for military type and target type firearms.

But they have no place on a fine gun. Some of the modern shotguns and rifles are beautiful until you notice the Torx head on the hinge pin or bottom metal. Its like a huge zit on a handsome face - you just want to squeeze and get rid of it.

Beauty of the slotted pin is that it takes skill and properly fitted turnscrew to use. And this keeps Bubba away, or at least gives you fair warning he has been inside.

And that can turn a lot of people off a gun so it means you can pick up bargains at auctions - that is provided he never got inside to do real harm.

Agreed. I recently acquired a NOS set of Burris signature rings that came with Allen screws for the ring tops. All the sets I've bought in the last 10 or so years have been converted to Torx. Not wanting to mess around with hex screws, I called Burris and they sent me some Torx screws free of charge. If they didn't help, I was headed to the neighborhood hardware store to see what they had.

I don't (yet) have any rifles fancy enough to be concerned about what the screw heads look like.

Ruger sells torx screws to customers at a very reasonable price..Hard hunting and Torx go together rather well..For those illusionists that thinkk they can tigten a slotted screw as tight a a torx, I challange that and put my money up..I can ruin a scope tube with torx screws, can't be done with a slotted screw..try it..Its even a warning on some scopes specs Im told..

With a proper fitting screwdriver, which is what should be used.... I have snapped the heads off on more than one occasion. I dont need to get them tighter than that!

Most flat head screws aren't as strong as SHCS or Torx head screws but it's very easy to check the screws rating

Ted,
you think Ruger slot screws are a different hardness than their torxs?
12 January 2023, 21:02
Atkinson
Im pretty sure Ruger torx or tougher ( probably harder) You can't strip one out within reason, and you can leave a dented track is some scopes with a torx, so be careful..

I don't see anywhere that we were talking about torx for bottom metal or butt plates?? My post was for scope ring screws only..as they are difficult to find locally. Ive never seen a custom rifle with Torx screws in the bottom metal or the butt plate, never?? who has?
